Previously: When pediatric surgeon Dr. Claire Vance was summoned to a freezing, remote runway at dusk, she expected a routine emergency. Instead, the helicopter carried a dying billionaire who held the key to her forgotten past.

The Ghost from the Past

As the heavy cabin door slid open, the warm, sterile air of the medical interior clashed with the freezing wind. Claire climbed inside, her professional instincts instantly taking over. But the moment her eyes fell upon the patient strapped to the gurney, the breath was knocked clean from her lungs. The elderly man, pale and hooked to a portable ventilator, was a face she hadn't seen in over twenty years. It was Arthur Vance—her billionaire father, the man who had walked out on her and her mother when she was just a child, leaving them with nothing but debts and broken promises.

"What is he doing here?" Claire whispered, her voice cracking as she turned to Miller, who had climbed in behind her. "Why did you bring him to me?"
"Because you are the only one who can save him, Doctor," Miller replied, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "And you are the only one he trusts. He was poisoned, Claire. His new wife and stepson are trying to seize his estate, and they've already bribed the board at the city hospital. If we brought him there, he wouldn't survive the night."

Claire's mind spun. The father who had abandoned her was now dying of a deliberate poisoning, and his life depended entirely on her medical expertise and her signature as his medical proxy. She looked down at Arthur's frail form. Despite the decades of anger and resentment burning in her chest, the oath she took as a healer—and a strange, lingering thread of daughterly love—tugged at her heart.

Suddenly, the sound of tires screeching echoed from the edge of the tarmac. Two dark SUVs breached the security gate, tearing through the slush directly toward the helicopter. "They found us," Miller cursed, drawing a compact radio from his coat. "We need to move him into the hangar's private clinic now!"
