Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs as the smell of burning rubber filled her nose. She gasped, rushing forward to where Mark lay sprawled among the shopping carts. But before she could reach him, the driver’s side door of the white SUV flung open. A disheveled young man stepped out, his eyes wild and his hands shaking.

It was Julian, Mark’s younger brother.

Sarah stopped dead in her tracks. Julian was supposed to be thousands of miles away, yet here he was, looking like a man on the edge of a breakdown. He didn't even look at Sarah. Instead, he pointed a trembling finger at Mark, who was slowly pushing himself up from the concrete, his yellow t-shirt covered in dust.

"You thought you could just hide here?" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with desperation. "They found me, Mark! They know where the money went. You have to give me the rest of it, or I'm dead!"

Sarah looked between the two brothers, her mind spinning. "The money?" she whispered, the old wounds of her betrayal ripping wide open.

"Mark, what is he talking about? You took our savings. You ruined us!"

Mark finally looked at Sarah, his eyes filled with a profound, agonizing sadness. He didn't look like a thief; he looked like a broken savior. He stepped between Julian and Sarah, shielding her from his brother's erratic movements.

"Sarah, go inside. Please," Mark begged, his voice cracking. "This doesn't concern you."

"It concerns me!" Sarah yelled, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "You walked out on our marriage and took everything! I deserve to know why!"

Julian let out a bitter, manic laugh.

"You think he took it for himself, Sarah? He took it to save my life! I lost it all to some dangerous people, and your perfect husband chose to play the hero!"
