Previously: A raging fire engulfs a politician's mansion while his daughter is trapped inside. The responding firefighter faces a horrifying choice: save the child or the priceless cars.

A Father's Reckoning

Armand Dubois, his carefully constructed facade crumbling, lunged forward in a desperate attempt to reclaim his daughter. He saw Camille, his precious heirloom, his investment, and the primal instinct to possess her, to protect his perceived assets, surged through him. But Clara Vance was faster, more resolute. With a swift, practiced movement, she intercepted his charge with a stiff forearm strike to his chest. The impact sent the politician, all two hundred pounds of him, skidding backward across the slick obsidian driveway with a sickening thud. Rainwater splashed outwards, momentarily obscuring his stunned face.

"Keep your filthy hands off her until my paramedics secure her airway!"

Clara’s voice was like ice, sharp and cutting, devoid of any sympathy. Dubois, sprawled on the wet ground, could only watch, his body trembling uncontrollably. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring his vision as he choked back ragged sobs. The carefully cultivated image of the powerful, untouchable politician dissolved, revealing a broken man, exposed in his utter inadequacy. He was on his elbows, chin quivering, breath hitching in his throat, the cold rain plastering his sodden cashmere to his skin.

As Clara gently transferred Camille onto an arriving gurney, the little girl coughed softly against the oxygen mask. It was a fragile sound, a whisper of life amidst the roaring flames and the politician’s pathetic weeping. Dubois scrambled on hands and knees, a grotesque parody of paternal concern, across the wet pavement. His expensive suit was soaked, smeared with mud and ash, the last vestiges of his former grandeur washed away by the downpour and his own desperate fear.

"Camille... oh God, Camille... forgive me, I thought the nursery was completely empty!"

His voice fractured, spittle flecking his lips as he pleaded for absolution, a desperate, nonsensical excuse that hung in the air, heavy with his prior callousness. Clara Vance stood over him, her chest heaving, veins pulsing at her temple. Her steely eyes, usually filled with compassion for the victims she rescued, now held a chilling lack of mercy. She had seen his true colors, his blatant disregard for his own child in favor of his material possessions. The revelation that he had lied about the nursery’s safety, knowing it was far from the fire's origin, only solidified her contempt.
