A Decades-Old Secret Unravels

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Security guards rushed forward, and Natalie was quickly pushed aside as medical staff attended to the unconscious socialite. Trembling, Natalie cleaned up the broken glass, her mind racing. Why had her mother's name caused such a violent reaction? Marion Calder was just a quiet, hardworking woman who lived in a cramped apartment, currently battling a severe illness. She had never spoken of high society or wealthy grandmothers.

An hour later, as Natalie was preparing to leave, a stern-faced security guard stopped her. "Mrs. Vanderbilte has regained consciousness. She is in the private VIP lounge, and she is demanding to see you. Immediately."

Fear gripped Natalie, but curiosity pushed her forward. When she entered the lavishly decorated private suite, she found Charlotte sitting on a velvet sofa, looking pale but remarkably composed. The pearl tiara was gone, leaving her swept-back grey hair slightly disheveled.

"Close the door," Charlotte commanded the guard. Once they were alone, her intense gaze locked onto Natalie again. "Sit down, child."

Natalie remained standing, clutching her jade pendant. "What is going on, ma'am? How do you know my mother?"

Charlotte let out a shaky breath, her eyes filling with tears that she quickly brushed away. "That pendant... I bought it in Hong Kong thirty years ago. I gave it to my only daughter, Marion, on her eighteenth birthday. It is a one-of-a-kind heirloom."

Natalie felt the room spin. "Your daughter? My mother never told me she had a family like this. She told me she was an orphan."

"Because to her, we were dead," Charlotte whispered, her voice cracking. "Twenty-three years ago, Marion fell in love with a man we did not approve ofโ€”a simple mechanic. I gave her an ultimatum: leave him, or be disowned. I thought she would choose her wealth. Instead, she packed her bags, took that pendant, and vanished into the night. I have spent over two decades pretending she didn't exist to protect our family's pride, but I never stopped looking for her."
