The Shadow of the Past

Robert explained that the weary, ragged travelers who had passed by Grace’s camp hours earlier were actually his scouts, sent ahead to survey the route. Grace and her friends had shared their precious bread without hesitation or expectation of reward. Deeply moved by their selflessness, Robert insisted on taking the group to his estate, offering them shelter in a beautiful, warm cottage on his land and promising Grace a respectable job at his textile mill.

For the first time in months, Grace slept in a real bed, surrounded by warmth and the scent of fresh pine. But the peace she so desperately craved was shattered the very next morning. A violent pounding rattled the heavy oak door of the cottage. When Grace opened it, her blood ran cold. Standing on the porch was Harold, her estranged husband—the very man who had cast her out into the street days before.

Flanked by two burly debt collectors, Harold sneered as he pushed his way into the cozy living room. He had caught wind of Grace’s sudden good fortune and wanted his share.

"Did you really think you could run away with my property, Grace?" Harold spat, his eyes gleaming with malice. "Everything you have belongs to me. And this land? I’ve just purchased the deed from the local council. You are trespassing."

Robert stepped into the room, his presence commanding and stern, but Harold merely laughed, waving an official-looking document in the air. The corrupt local magistrate had indeed signed over the cottage's plot to Harold in exchange for a hefty bribe. Harold threatened to have Grace and her friends thrown into the county jail by nightfall unless she surrendered the gold and resources Robert had promised her.
