Previously: When Martha shared her final piece of bread with a group of starving travelers during the Great Depression, she had no idea one of them held the key to her future.

The Weight of Kindness

Martha’s mind raced as she stared at the elegant man before her. Slowly, the fog of her exhaustion cleared, and she recognized the sharp jawline and kind eyes. Two days ago, three ragged travelers had begged for water at her well. They had looked like every other displaced family, hollow-cheeked and desperate. Without hesitation, Martha had given them her only loaf of bread and a pitcher of fresh water. She had expected nothing in return, believing that kindness was the only currency left in a bankrupt world.

Now, those same men stood before her, transformed into powerful figures of industry. Henry explained that he was a wealthy businessman who had traveled incognito to witness the true state of the country.

"Your selflessness restored my faith in humanity, Martha,"

Henry said, reaching out to help her stand.

"I vowed to return and ensure you never hunger again."

Before Martha could process his words, the harsh screech of a rusted Ford interrupted them. Arthur, the ruthless local land agent, stepped out of his vehicle with a sneer. He held a stack of foreclosure papers, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent. Arthur had been trying to evict Martha and the orphans for months to sell the land to a railroad company.

"Martha! Your time is up,"

Arthur barked, ignoring the luxury cars.

"Get off this property immediately. The bank has officially seized it."

Henry stood up, his warm expression instantly hardening into ice. He stepped between Martha and the aggressive agent.

"And who exactly authorized this eviction?"

Henry asked, his voice dripping with authority.

Arthur laughed mockingly.

"The State Syndicate owns this land, stranger. And unless you have ten thousand dollars in cash, you have no say here."

Henry calmly signaled to his associates, who brought forward a heavy iron lockbox from the black car.
