Previously: When Elena discovered her boss's financial fraud, she expected a termination letter—not a violent assault. But her colleague Joanna was waiting in the shadows with her own agenda.

Unmasking the Savior

Elena gasped, coughing up dust and tiny fragments of glass as she struggled to sit up. Her face was scratched, but the adrenaline pulsing through her veins kept the pain at bay. Joanna was already at her side, her hands firm yet gentle as she brushed the debris from Elena's red hair.

"Are you alright? Can you stand?"
Joanna asked, her voice remarkably calm for someone who had just taken down a grown man.

Richard groaned on the floor, clutching his bruised ribs and cursing under his breath. He tried to reach for his desk drawer, where a registered firearm was kept, but Joanna stepped firmly onto his wrist, pinning it to the floor. "Don't even think about it, Richard," she warned, her eyes cold as steel.

Elena stared at her colleague in utter disbelief. Joanna had always been the quiet assistant who brewed the coffee and scheduled meetings.

"Who are you?"
Elena whispered, clutching the damp folder to her chest. Joanna reached into her waistcoat pocket, but instead of a phone, she pulled out a gold badge. "Special Agent Joanna Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation," she revealed.
"I've been undercover here for six months trying to nail Richard for money laundering. You just gave me the final piece of the puzzle, Elena. But you also put a massive target on your back."

Richard laughed hoarsely from the floor, a dark, desperate sound.

"You think you two are getting out of this building alive? My security detail monitors every camera. They are already on their way up."
As if on cue, the elevator at the end of the hall chimed, its doors sliding open to reveal two burly men in dark suits.
