Previously: When Ashley physically assaulted her elderly mother-in-law, Florence, she expected her husband Patrick to help her. Instead, Patrick's shocking double-cross exposed a web of greed that changed their family forever.

A Web of Deceit

Ashley lay on the wet floor, her pink dress soaked and ruined, gasping for air as her eyes blazed with fury. She glared up at her husband, unable to comprehend the betrayal. Patrick, however, was already kneeling beside Florence, wrapping his arms around his mother with a show of deep, dramatic concern that seemed entirely fabricated.

"Don't you ever lay a hand on my mother again, Ashley!" Patrick roared, his voice dripping with righteous indignation. "Get out of this house!"

Florence watched her son, her heart heavy with a grief that had nothing to do with her physical pain. She knew Patrick. She knew the greed that lurked behind his blue eyes. For months, Ashley had been the overt bully, trying to break Florence’s spirit so she would willingly move into an assisted living facility. But Patrick had been the quiet manipulator, whispering in the shadows. This sudden act of heroism was nothing more than a performance.

Ashley scrambled to her feet, water dripping from her blonde hair. She let out a harsh, mocking laugh that echoed through the high ceilings of the living room.

"Oh, please, Patrick! Don't play the saint now!" Ashley screamed, pointing a trembling finger at him. "You were the one who planned this! You told me to push her until she cracked so we could finally get the deed to this estate! You wanted her gone just as much as I did!"

Patrick’s face turned pale under the bright, natural light of the living room. He quickly turned back to Florence, trying to salvage his deception. He pulled a folded document from his blue suit jacket—a power of attorney form he had been trying to get her to sign for weeks.

"Mother, don't listen to her. She’s crazy," Patrick pleaded, his voice trembling. "Sign this, and I will protect you from her forever. I’ll make sure she never steps foot in this house again."

Florence looked from the pen in Patrick’s hand to the furious Ashley. The trap had been laid, but they had vastly underestimated the quiet strength of the woman they thought they had broken.
