An Unforgettable Encounter in Paris

The rain hammered against the grand, arched windows of Le Ciel Bleu, Paris’s most prestigious restaurant, each drop a percussive beat against the opulent silence within. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of beeswax from the dripping candelabras and the faint, metallic tang of expensive silverware. Mahogany paneling gleamed under the soft light, reflecting the hushed drama unfolding at one of its prime tables. Victoria Sterling, 38, a vision in emerald silk, her sculpted cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass, toyed with a crystal wine glass. Her aristocratic posture was as rigid as her family name. Opposite her sat Arthur, 48, a man etched by the sea. His silver stubble was a testament to countless days at sea, his eyes crinkled with a life lived under harsh sun and salt spray. He wore a dripping black neoprene diving suit, a stark contrast to the damask linen and polished mahogany surrounding him, a dark canvas jacket glistening with ocean droplets that pooled onto the antique Aubusson carpet.

“You sold your soul and three years chasing sunken myths, Arthur... you're nothing but a bankrupt, salt-soaked beggar.”

Victoria’s voice dripped with aristocratic condescension, her crimson lips curling into a sneer as she surveyed Arthur’s sodden form. He remained silent, his jaw a mask of granite, droplets of water tracing paths down his weathered brow. Undeterred, Victoria leaned forward, a cruel amusement dancing in her eyes. She casually flicked a crumpled hundred-euro bill across the table, its flight a dismissive arc towards Arthur’s wine goblet.

“Take it and buy a warm blanket before the maître d' calls the police to throw you into the gutter.”

Her words were laced with biting mockery. Arthur’s piercing blue eyes, however, remained locked on hers, a predatory stillness in their depths. Beneath his arm, a burlap-wrapped mass was clutched tightly, his calloused, salt-chapped hand forming a hard knot around it.
