The sterile chill of the emergency veterinary trauma bay was a stark contrast to the tempest raging outside. Rain lashed against the open bay doors, each drop a percussion beat against the linoleum floor, reflecting the harsh, circular glare of surgical lights. Damian Knox, all sculpted arrogance and a smirk that promised trouble, leaned against a stainless steel tray, his expensive overcoat a testament to a life of privilege. He watched as Elena Vance, a figure of quiet intensity in a damp trench coat, stepped out of a battered taxi, the storm seemingly clinging to her. Ten years had passed since he’d last seen her, ten years since he’d publicly dismissed her. The air crackled with unspoken history.

Damian’s laughter was a cruel, mocking sound that echoed in the sterile space. He threw his head back, his manicured finger pointed accusingly at Elena, who stood dripping rainwater onto the pristine floor. "Ten years after high school and you're still pulling up in fifty-dollar cabs to clean up my mess, Elena!" His voice dripped with condescension, the same venom he’d used to poison their shared past. Elena, however, remained silent, her emerald eyes unblinking, meeting his sneer with a composure that unnerved him. She deliberately loosened the belt of her trench coat, a subtle gesture that spoke volumes.

The Calm Before The Storm

Suddenly, the night was shattered by the piercing wail of sirens and the blinding flash of red and blue lights. Three black armored Suburbans screeched to a halt behind Elena’s taxi, their hydraulic doors slamming open. Eight heavily armed tactical agents swarmed the bay, their presence an immediate, overwhelming force. Damian’s smug smirk froze, his pupils dilating in shock. He stammered, his voice cracking, "What the hell is this—who authorized federal agents into my private trauma ward?!" Elena, however, didn't flinch. The agents formed an impenetrable diamond around her, their combat boots a silent, unyielding shield.
