Friday Morning, I Walked Into the Trap With My Own Weapon

Friday arrived faster than I was ready for. I hadn't slept in three days. The private investigator had agreed to meet me at a coffee shop in Santa Monica, and I'd spent the night rehearsing what I'd say.

But when I walked in, he was already sitting at a corner table, a manila folder in front of him. His face was unreadable.

"I've done a lot of work for Camilla," he said, pushing the folder toward me. "But I never liked her. This? This is too far."

I opened the folder. Inside was a USB drive and a printed email chain — Camilla's correspondence with my father's CFO, dated six months ago.

"She was funneling money out of the company," the investigator said. "She planned to frame your father for embezzlement and take over. She even set up a shell company in the Bahamas."

I stared at the papers, my mind whirring. "This is enough to destroy her."

"It's enough to send her to prison," he agreed. "But she's not going to go quietly. She's meeting your father at the house this afternoon. She's going to give him an ultimatum."

My heart stopped. "The house?"

"She wants to do it in front of the family. Make it a show."

I stood up, shoving the folder into my bag. "Thank you. I owe you."

"Just promise me one thing," he said. "When you take her down, make sure she knows it was you."

I drove to Malibu like a woman possessed. The sun was high, the ocean glittering, but I saw none of it. All I could think about was Camilla's face when she realized she'd lost.

When I arrived, the house was buzzing with tension. My father stood by the glass wall, his hands clasped behind his back. Ethan hovered by the door, his iPad clutched to his chest. And Camilla sat on the white sofa, legs crossed, a triumphant smile on her face.

"Ah, Clara," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "Just in time. I was about to tell your father about our little arrangement."

"There's no arrangement," I said, walking toward her. "There's only the truth."

I pulled out the USB drive and held it up. "Camilla, I have evidence that you've been embezzling from the company for months. I have your emails, your wire transfers, and a recording of you planning to frame Dad for crimes you committed."

Camilla's smile faltered. "You're bluffing."

"Am I?" I turned to Ethan. "Play it."

Ethan tapped his iPad, and the recording of Camilla's phone call filled the room. Her voice, cold and calculating, echoed off the glass walls.

"...once Julian is in prison, the company will be mine..."

My father's face went white. He turned to Camilla, his eyes blazing. "You were going to send me to prison?"

Camilla stood, her composure cracking. "Julian, I can explain—"

"Explain what?" he roared. "That you tried to drown my son? That you framed my daughter? That you've been stealing from me?"

"You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly," he said, his voice dropping to an icy calm. "I understand that you're a monster."

He turned to the security guards who had been waiting in the wings. "Take her. Call the police. And this time, make sure she doesn't get out."

Camilla screamed as the guards grabbed her arms, her heels scraping against the marble floor. "You can't do this! I have information about your wife!"

My father froze. "What did you say?"

"Your first wife," Camilla spat, her eyes wild. "The accident. It wasn't an accident. I know who killed her."

The room went silent. I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.

"I know," Camilla continued, "because I have the police report. And the name of the man who did it."

My father's face crumpled. "No..."

"I'll tell you everything," Camilla said, a desperate smile creeping onto her lips. "But only if you drop the charges and let me go."

I looked at my father. His eyes were wet, his hands shaking. For a moment, I thought he might agree.

But then he looked at me, at Ethan, at Noah sleeping in his crib. "No," he said, his voice steady. "You're going to tell me everything, and then you're going to prison. That's the only deal you're getting."

Camilla's smile vanished. "You'll regret this, Julian. I'll ruin you."

"You already tried," he said. "And you failed."

The guards dragged her out, her screams echoing through the house. When the door slammed shut, my father collapsed onto the sofa, his head in his hands.

I sat beside him, taking his hand. "Dad, what did she mean about Mom?"

He was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely a whisper. "Your mother... she found out about a fraud scheme at the company. A partner of mine, Robert Hale. He was the one who..."

I felt my heart crack. "You knew?"

"I didn't know until after," he said, tears streaming down his face. "I spent years trying to find him. The police never did. I've been looking for him ever since."

"And Camilla found him," I said.

"She found a lead," he said. "A name. A location."

I squeezed his hand. "Then we'll find him together. And we'll make him pay."

He looked at me, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "Clara, I'm so sorry. I should have told you the truth years ago."

"We'll deal with that later," I said. "Right now, we have a monster to catch."

In the distance, I heard the wail of police sirens. Camilla was gone, but the fight wasn't over. My mother's killer was still out there. And now, I had a new mission.

I looked at Noah, who had woken up and was reaching for me from his crib. I picked him up, holding him close.

"You're safe," I whispered. "And I'll make sure the rest of the world is too."

And for the first time in my life, I felt like I truly understood what it meant to be a protector.

Some secrets take years to surface. But the truth, once it's out, has a way of setting you free.
