The lid swung open, and the horrific reality was laid bare. Arthur lay inside, his chest heaving, his eyes streaming with tears of relief. Leo gasped, his stomach turning as he saw the silver duct tape bound tightly over his mouth and the heavy ropes binding his wrists.

"Dad!"

Leo cried, immediately leaning in to rip the tape away. Arthur gasped for air, coughing violently as the fresh oxygen hit his lungs.

"Maria..."

Arthur wheezed, his voice weak but filled with rage.

"She did this. She poisoned my tea... a paralytic. I couldn't move, couldn't speak. She had a corrupt coroner sign the death certificate. They were going to cremate me alive today to get the estate."

Leo’s blood ran cold. He quickly untied his father’s hands, pulling him up from the satin-lined prison. Behind them, Maria scrambled toward the front door, but she was met by two police officers. Leo had called his detective friend on the way over, suspicious of the sudden funeral invitation. The sirens now wailed in the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing through the gloomy living room windows.

Maria was handcuffed, her face twisted in bitter defeat as she was led away. Arthur collapsed into his son’s arms, weeping not from sorrow, but from the overwhelming realization that he had survived the ultimate betrayal. He looked at Leo, his voice trembling.

"You saved my life, son. I thought I was drawing my last breath in that darkness."
