The Web of Deceit

A collective murmur swept through the ballroom. Guests leaned in, their eyes darting between the barefoot woman, the paralyzed heir, and the furious older brother. Edward tried to maintain his composure, flashing a tight, artificial smile to the crowd. He signaled two burly security guards waiting by the heavy oak doors.

"My brother's former nurse has clearly suffered a mental break," Edward announced smoothly, his voice projecting confidence. "Please, escort her out immediately."

But Nathan’s grip on Mia’s hands tightened. For three years, he had been told that Mia had abandoned him after the car crash that left him paralyzed. He had been told she took a settlement and ran. Yet here she was, wearing a ruined wedding dress, looking at him with nothing but pure, agonizing love. "Wait," Nathan muttered, his voice raspy. "Edward, let her speak."

"Nathan, she is unstable," Edward hissed, grabbing the arm of the wheelchair. "We are leaving."

Mia pulled a crumpled, yellowed medical document from the pocket of her dress. "He’s lying to you, Nathan! Your spine was never severed!" she screamed as the security guards grabbed her shoulders. "I found the original neurological reports from the night of the accident. The doctors said you would make a full recovery in six weeks! But Edward paid them off. He forged the papers to keep you in this chair so he could control the family estate!"

The crowd gasped. Edward’s face turned from pale to a dark, furious crimson. "She's insane! Take her away!" he roared at the guards.

As the guards began to drag Mia away, her bare feet scraping against the marble, she screamed one last desperate warning. "Look at the water, Nathan! Look at the glass he gives you every single day! He’s been keeping you drugged! Don't drink it!"

Nathan looked down at the crystal glass of water sitting on his wheelchair tray. His hand began to tremble as a wave of terrifying realization washed over him.
