Previously: Veronica pretended to be sedated while Tiffany raided the safe. But the syringe held only water. When Veronica's eyes snapped open, Tiffany's world shattered.

The Final Card

Veronica’s mind raced as the elevator doors reopened. She grabbed Sophie’s hand and ran to her office, but the room was empty. The safe was still open, the velvet box still on the desk. The letter from her husband was still in her hand.

“She took something,” Sophie said, pointing to the floor. A single sheet of paper lay crumpled near the safe.

Veronica picked it up. It was a copy of the original will — the one Tiffany had filed. But at the bottom, in her husband’s handwriting, was a note: “This is a forgery. The true will is in the hands of Richard Hale.”

“He knew,” Veronica whispered. “He knew she’d try this.”

She called Richard Hale. He answered after two rings.

“Veronica,” he said, his voice heavy. “I was expecting your call. I have the original will. I’ve been holding it for this exact moment.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me sooner?” she asked.

“Because your husband made me promise to wait,” he said. “He knew Tiffany would make a move. He wanted to catch her red-handed.”

Veronica’s eyes filled with tears. “He planned all of this.”

“He did,” Richard said. “He knew she’d come for the money. He just didn’t expect you to be the one who caught her.”

An hour later, Veronica and Sophie stood in Richard’s library, the original will in her hands. It was dated a week before her husband’s death, signed and notarized, leaving everything to her and Sophie.

“This is ironclad,” Richard said. “I was the witness. I’d testify in any court.”

Veronica looked at Sophie, who was staring at the will with wide eyes. “We’re safe,” she said.

But then her phone buzzed again. Another text from the unknown number: “You think a piece of paper can stop me? I have something you want. Meet me at the pier at sunset. Come alone.”

Veronica’s heart sank. She knew what Tiffany meant. The security footage from the boardroom — the video that showed Tiffany stealing the bonds — had been erased from the office feed. Tiffany had made sure of it.

“She has the evidence,” Veronica said. “If she destroys it, the police might not have enough to convict her.”

Richard frowned. “What do you propose?”

“I go,” Veronica said. “I’ll face her.”

Sophie grabbed her arm. “You can’t go alone!”

“I won’t,” Veronica said. “I have a plan.”

At sunset, Veronica stood at the end of the pier, the wind whipping at her coat. Tiffany was waiting, her designer handbag in one hand, a USB drive in the other.

“You came,” Tiffany said, smirking. “How predictable.”

“What do you want, Tiffany?” Veronica asked.

“I want the original will,” Tiffany said. “Destroy it, and I’ll give you the footage. You’ll live in peace, and I’ll disappear.”

Veronica laughed. “You think I’d trust you?”

“You don’t have a choice,” Tiffany said. “Without that footage, the police have nothing. The bonds were recovered, but I can claim I was just holding them for you.”

Veronica reached into her pocket and pulled out a small recorder. “I have a choice,” she said. “I’ve been recording this entire conversation.”

Tiffany’s face went pale. “You—”

“And I have witnesses,” Veronica said. “Richard was watching from the car. And so were the police.”

At that moment, headlights flooded the pier. Police cars screeched to a halt, and officers poured out, guns drawn.

Tiffany screamed as they cuffed her, the USB drive falling from her hand. Veronica picked it up and smiled.

“Game over,” she said.

As they drove Tiffany away, Sophie ran to Veronica and hugged her tight.

“You did it, Aunt Veronica,” she whispered.

Veronica knelt down and looked into the girl’s eyes. “We did it, sweetheart. Together.”

The next morning, the will was probated. Veronica and Sophie inherited everything. Tiffany was charged with attempted theft, forgery, and child endangerment. She would spend years in prison.

That evening, Veronica sat with Sophie in the boardroom, watching the sunset paint the sky in gold.

“What happens now?” Sophie asked.

Veronica smiled. “Now we live. We build a life that your uncle would be proud of.”

Sophie leaned her head on Veronica’s shoulder. “I’m glad you’re not sick anymore.”

“So am I,” Veronica said, stroking her hair. “So am I.”

And in that quiet moment, surrounded by the city they had saved, they found a new beginning.
