She Faked a Coma to Test Her Gold-Digger Bride-to-Be — Then Caught Her Wrist Mid-Air
Previously: Catherine pretended to be comatose to see her son's fiancée's true colors. When Chloe-Mae attacked little Ruby and stole the tiara, Catherine rose from the bed—and revealed the ultimate trap.
The Message That Changed Everything
Catherine read the message again, her thumb frozen over the screen. Jack had no idea that his fiancée had just been arrested for attempted theft and child abuse. He thought he was coming home to a wedding. Instead, he was coming home to a war zone.
She looked at Ruby, who was now curled up on the velvet chaise, the tiara still perched on her head, her eyes heavy with exhaustion. Catherine's heart ached. She had staged the coma to test Chloe-Mae's character, but she had never imagined it would go this far. She had never imagined Chloe-Mae would hurt Ruby.

"Ruby, sweetheart," Catherine said softly, sitting down beside her. "Do you remember what I told you about trusting people?"
Ruby nodded, her voice sleepy. "You said some people are like rotten apples on the inside, even if they look pretty on the outside."
Catherine smiled. "That's right. And tonight, we found a rotten apple. But you know what? We also found out how brave you are."
Ruby's eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Really," Catherine said. "You stood up to her. You protected me. That's the bravest thing a little girl can do."
But even as she said the words, Catherine's mind was racing. Jack had been with Chloe-Mae for two years. He had proposed to her in Italy, bought her a ring that cost more than most people's houses. He was blinded by love—or perhaps by something else. Chloe-Mae had a way of making people see what she wanted them to see.
Catherine needed to know exactly what Jack was planning to tell her.
She pulled out her phone and called him. He picked up on the second ring.
"Mom! You're awake? I thought you were—"
"I'm fine," Catherine said, keeping her voice steady. "I have a lot to tell you, but first, what's the important thing you wanted to say about Chloe-Mae?"
There was a pause. Then Jack's voice came through, heavy with worry. "Mom, I think she's been lying to me. About everything. I hired a private investigator a few weeks ago, because I had a feeling something was off. And what he found... it's bad."
Catherine's grip on the phone tightened. "Tell me."
"She's not who she says she is," Jack said slowly. "Her real name is Chloe-Mae Whitmore, and she's been married twice before. Both times, she married wealthy older men. Both times, they died under mysterious circumstances. And both times, she inherited everything before the wills could be contested."
Catherine felt the floor drop out from under her. "She's a black widow."
"Worse," Jack said. "The investigator found a bank account in the Cayman Islands with over two million dollars in it. She's been siphoning money from my business accounts for months. And Mom, she's been poisoning you."
Catherine's breath caught. "What?"
"I had her hairbrush tested," Jack said, his voice breaking. "It had traces of a slow-acting toxin. That's why you had the stroke-like symptoms. That's why the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. She was killing you, Mom. Slowly."
Catherine sank into the chaise, her legs giving out. Ruby looked up at her, alarmed. "Grandma?"
"I'm okay," Catherine whispered, but her mind was spinning. She had faked the coma to test Chloe-Mae's gold-digging tendencies. She had never imagined that Chloe-Mae was trying to murder her.
"Where is she now?" Jack asked, his voice urgent.
"Arrested," Catherine said. "About ten minutes ago. But Jack, there's something you need to know. She hurt Ruby."
There was a long silence. Then Jack's voice came through, cold as ice. "I'm calling my lawyer. And I'm calling the police. She's not getting out of this one."
Catherine hung up and looked at Ruby, who was now fully awake, watching her with wide eyes.
"Grandma, is Daddy okay?"
"He's fine," Catherine said, pulling her close. "He's just very, very angry."
But even as she comforted Ruby, Catherine knew the night was far from over. Chloe-Mae was in custody, but she was cunning. She would try to twist the story, claim she was the victim, maybe even try to implicate Catherine in some sort of scheme. And with her track record, she might have a backup plan—someone else in the shadows, ready to finish what she started.
Catherine glanced at the safe, now empty of the tiara but still holding something she hadn't shown anyone. A second document, hidden behind a false panel. It was a revised will, leaving everything to Ruby—and nothing to Jack's future wife, whoever she might be. Catherine had prepared it the day she met Chloe-Mae.
She had always known.
But she had not known about the poison.
She pulled out her phone again and dialed a number she hadn't called in years—an old friend who worked in forensic toxicology at the county lab. "I need a full blood panel done," she said. "And I need it fast. There's a chance I've been poisoned."
The next hour was a blur of police reports, phone calls, and hushed conversations. Ruby fell asleep on the chaise, her small hand clutching Catherine's dress. Catherine sat beside her, her mind replaying every interaction she'd ever had with Chloe-Mae—every smile, every compliment, every 'I love you so much, Mrs. Delacroix.'
It had all been a lie.
And now, Chloe-Mae was in jail, but she wasn't defeated. She had a lawyer, a team of them, probably. And she had a way of getting what she wanted.
Just as Catherine was about to call Jack back, her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.
"You think you've won, old woman. But I have a secret about your precious granddaughter that will destroy you all. See you in court."
Catherine's blood ran cold. She looked at Ruby's sleeping face, so innocent, so trusting. What secret could Chloe-Mae possibly know about Ruby?
She had no idea that the answer would shatter everything she thought she knew about her family.
