She Faked a Coma to Trap Her Greedy Stepbrother, But His Final Threat Changed Everything
The Silent Bedroom
The rain tapped against the window like a nervous heartbeat. Inside the private medical wing, the only sounds were the soft beep of the heart monitor and the slow, steady tick of the grandfather clock. It was 9:15 PM, and Catherine Delacroix lay perfectly still under the satin duvet, her silver-streaked dark hair spread across the pillow like a crown.
For three days, she had been 'unconscious'—a medically induced coma, according to the chart that hung at the foot of the bed. The vineyard heiress, the woman who had built an empire from a single plot of grapes, was now a shell, a body with no mind. Or so everyone believed.

Grace, eleven years old and small for her age, stood guard by the bedside table. The tray of medicine—the real heart medicine, not the placebos her step-uncle had tried to swap—was her sole responsibility. Her white blouse was wrinkled, and her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but she stood firm.
Bryce Delacroix, Catherine's stepbrother, entered the room without knocking. He wore a leather blazer that looked expensive but fit him like a costume. His gold watch caught the lamplight as he gestured toward the door.
'This estate belongs to me!' he said, his voice a low, sneering drawl.
Grace flinched but didn't move. 'The medicine,' she whispered, her voice cracking. 'Don't throw that medicine away!'
Bryce laughed, a cold, dry sound. He swept his arm across the tray, sending vials and bottles crashing to the floor. 'You think that matters now?' He grabbed the mansion deed from the sideboard, holding it up like a trophy. 'Your mother is a vegetable. She can't sign anything, and she can't stop me.'
Grace stepped between him and the bed, her small hands balled into fists. 'She's not a vegetable! She's just sick! And you're stealing from her!'
Bryce raised his hand, a wicked smirk twisting his lips. 'Move, you little brat, or you'll end up like her.'
But Grace didn't move. She stood her ground, tears streaming down her cheeks, her lower lip trembling. 'I won't let you touch her!'
Just as Bryce lunged toward her, the satin duvet flew back. Catherine's eyes snapped open, bright and furious. She rose from the bed in one fluid motion, her burgundy silk wrap dress flowing around her. Her hand shot out and caught Bryce's wrist in an iron grip, stopping his lunge mid-air.
'Take your hands off her,' she said, her voice a regal, commanding alto.
Bryce froze. His pupils dilated in sheer terror. 'You—you're—'
Catherine held his gaze, her grip tightening. 'Yes, Bryce. I'm awake. And I've been awake for the past three days.' She reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a folder. 'I have a doctor's report here, signed by three specialists, confirming that I was never in a coma. I had them stage it. And this—' she held up a small remote, '—controls the hidden camera in the grandfather clock.'
Bryce's face went ashen. He tried to pull his wrist free, but Catherine held on. 'You can't—this is insane—'
'Insane?' Catherine's laugh was sharp, almost gentle. 'You were going to throw away my heart medication and steal my late husband's estate in front of his daughter. I wanted to see how far you'd go.'
The door burst open, and two uniformed police officers rushed in. Steel handcuffs clicked around Bryce's wrists before he could even react. He sagged, his head hanging in ruin.
Catherine wrapped her arm around Grace's shoulders, pulling her close. 'Cuff him and take him,' she said to the officers.
Grace looked up at her mother, eyes wide with wonder and relief. 'You were awake the whole time?'
Catherine kissed her forehead. 'I had to be, sweetheart. I needed to catch a wolf.'
But as the officers dragged Bryce toward the door, he twisted his head and spat out a final, venomous whisper: 'Catherine, you're not the only one who plays pretend.'
Grace stiffened. Catherine's heart skipped a beat. She didn't understand—not yet.
Then Bryce laughed, low and ugly, as the door shut behind him.
