Previously: Catherine pretended to be comatose to expose Bryce's greed, but when the police arrived, he whispered a secret that shattered her victory—and Grace's safety hung in the balance.

The Woman at the Door

The rain had stopped, but the air still felt heavy, charged. Catherine stood in the study, Grace tucked behind her like a shield. The phone call had lasted only a minute, but it had felt like an eternity. Isabelle Marsh had been calm, almost gentle, when she asked to meet Grace. But Catherine knew that gentleness was a mask.

Now, standing at the door, was a woman who looked nothing like the monster Catherine had imagined. Isabelle was tall, with Grace's same dark hair and green eyes. She wore a simple beige trench coat and held a small leather bag. She looked tired, but her smile was warm—disarming.

'Catherine,' Isabelle said, her voice soft. 'Thank you for seeing me.'

'Don't thank me yet,' Catherine replied, her hand resting on Grace's shoulder. 'Why are you here?'

Isabelle's smile faltered. 'I know this is a shock. And I know I have no right to ask for anything. But I've spent the last eleven years trying to make things right. When Richard died, I thought I could just let go. But then I found out about the trust fund, and about Grace, and I couldn't stay away.'

'You abandoned her,' Catherine said, her voice sharp. 'You left her with a man who lied to her every day. And now you want to come back like nothing happened?'

Isabelle winced. 'I was young. And scared. Richard's family—they made it clear I wasn't good enough for the Delacroix name. They threatened to take Grace away from me if I stayed. So I left, because I thought it was the only way to keep her safe.'

Grace stepped out from behind Catherine, her eyes locked on Isabelle. 'You're my real mother?' she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Isabelle nodded, tears streaming down her face. 'Yes, sweetheart. I'm your real mother. And I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you.'

Catherine watched the exchange, her heart warring between fear and empathy. She had spent years believing she was Grace's only mother. Now, she didn't know what to feel.

'I won't let you take her,' Catherine said, her voice cracking. 'She's my daughter. I raised her.'

'I'm not here to take her,' Isabelle said quickly. 'I just want to be part of her life. If you'll let me.'

Grace looked up at Catherine, her eyes searching. 'Mom? What should we do?'

Catherine knelt down and pulled Grace into a hug. 'I don't know, baby. But I promise you, I will never let anyone hurt you. Not Bryce, not Isabelle, not anyone.'

Isabelle watched them, her face unreadable. Then she reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope. 'I have something for you, Catherine. It's from Richard. He left it with a lawyer in Paris, with instructions to give it to you if I ever came back.'

Catherine took the envelope, her hands trembling. Inside was a single photograph: a young couple, laughing, on a vineyard in France. The man was Richard. The woman was Isabelle. And in the background, a small child—a baby—was held in Richard's arms.

On the back, in Richard's handwriting: 'My two families. I hope you can forgive me.'

Catherine stared at the photo, tears blurring her vision. She had loved Richard. She had trusted him with everything. And he had kept this secret for years—a secret that had nearly destroyed her family.

But as she looked at Grace, at the daughter she had raised and loved unconditionally, she realized that blood didn't matter. Love was what made a family.

She turned to Isabelle, her voice steady. 'You can stay. But you have to understand: Grace is my daughter. And I will always be her mother. If you can accept that, maybe we can find a way to make this work.'

Isabelle nodded, a sob escaping her lips. 'Thank you. Thank you so much.'

Grace looked up at Catherine, her eyes bright with hope. 'So we're a family now? All of us?'

Catherine smiled, pulling Grace close. 'Yes, honey. We're a family. And nothing can change that.'

Later that night, after Isabelle had left, Catherine sat on Grace's bed, watching her daughter sleep. The envelope from Richard lay open on the nightstand. She had read the letter a dozen times, and each time, she felt a mixture of anger and sadness. But she also felt a strange sense of peace.

She had spent years building walls, protecting herself from the world. But in the end, it was love—messy, complicated, and imperfect—that had saved her. She kissed Grace's forehead and whispered, 'I promise you, I will always fight for you.'

And she knew, whatever came next, they would face it together.
