Previously: Diana pretended to be paralyzed to expose Trevor's greed, but when he threatened her grandson, she rose from her chair with a secret that shattered him.

The Courtroom That Became My Stage

The judge looked at me over her reading glasses. "Mrs. Kensington, you claim your stroke was staged as part of an investigation. Do you have evidence?"

"Yes, Your Honor." I stood, my voice steady. "I have a brooch camera that recorded every interaction with my cousin Trevor in the days leading up to his arrest. I also have financial documents that link him to unauthorized transfers and the theft of trade secrets."

Trevor's lawyer jumped up. "Objection! This evidence was obtained illegally."

"Overruled," the judge said. "The video was taken in Mrs. Kensington's private residence. She had every right to record."

I handed the folder to the clerk. "These documents show that Trevor was working with an accomplice—someone who had access to my private files and my home."

I paused, looking directly at Margaret. Her face had gone pale.

"My sister, Margaret," I said, "was the accomplice."

The courtroom erupted. Margaret stood, her hands shaking. "That's a lie! You've always been paranoid!"

"Am I?" I pulled out a printout of an email. "This is a message from Margaret to Victor Hale, dated three weeks ago. It includes a detailed list of my company's pending patents. Care to explain?"

Margaret's mouth opened and closed like a fish. Trevor was silent, his face a mask of defeat.

The judge reviewed the evidence, her expression grim. "I'm ordering a full investigation into both Trevor and Margaret Kensington. Bail is revoked for Mr. Kensington, and Mrs. Kensington is to surrender her passport."

Margaret's eyes filled with tears, but I felt no pity. She had chosen greed over family. She had chosen to help a man who threatened her own nephew's child.

I turned to leave, Lucas holding my hand. But Margaret called out, her voice breaking.

"Diana, please. I'm your sister."

I stopped, my back to her. "You stopped being my sister the day you put Trevor's hand above Lucas's head."

I walked out without looking back.

A New Morning, a New Legacy

Months later, the dust settled. Trevor was sentenced to seven years for fraud and attempted assault. Margaret received a suspended sentence, but the shame was worse than any jail time. She moved abroad, and I knew I'd never see her again.

Lucas and I sat on the patio of the estate, watching the sun rise over the garden. The rain had finally stopped, and the air smelled clean and fresh.

"Grandma," he said, "why did you have to pretend to be sick?"

"Because sometimes," I said, "people only show you who they really are when they think you're not watching."

He nodded slowly, his young mind processing my words. "So you were watching all along?"

"I was always watching, sweetheart." I kissed his forehead. "And I'll always protect you."

I sold the pharmaceutical company to a trusted partner and used the proceeds to set up a trust fund for Lucas. I also donated a significant portion to stroke research—not just for the science, but as a reminder that even our darkest moments can lead to something good.

As I looked at Lucas, I realized that the real legacy wasn't the company or the money. It was the lesson I had taught him about courage and integrity. It was the truth that family isn't about blood—it's about who stands by you when you're down.

I wrapped my arm around him, and we watched the sun climb higher, casting golden light across the lawn.

"What happens now, Grandma?" Lucas asked.

"Now," I said, "we live."

And for the first time in years, I meant it.
