It was Richard Sterling, a ruthless local developer who had been hounding Beatrice for months to sell her property for pennies on the dollar.

"Well, Beatrice, time's up," Sterling said with a cold, triumphant smirk. "The foreclosure deadline is in exactly ten minutes. If you can't pay the outstanding mortgage and back taxes of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, this land belongs to my firm."

Beatrice trembled, clutching Julian’s arm. "Please, Mr. Sterling, just give me a few more weeks. This diner is all I have left."

"Business is business, old lady," Sterling sneered, pulling out the eviction paperwork. "Sign the transfer now and save yourself the embarrassment of being thrown out by the sheriff."

Julian stepped forward, shielding Beatrice. The warm, gentle boy she once knew had vanished, replaced by a formidable man with fierce determination in his eyes. His three brothers stepped up beside him, forming an impenetrable wall of support.
