Previously: Rachel slammed down a fake DNA test claiming my daughter wasn't mine. But Sophia opened an old chess king, revealing a sealed will and a 99.99% match — just before the truth shattered everything.

A week after Rachel’s arrest, I received a letter from her prison cell. It was short, written in her neat handwriting, and it chilled me to the bone.

“Nathaniel, you think you’ve won, but you haven’t. The will you found? It’s not the only one. There’s another, and it will change everything. Ask your mother about the night your father died.”

I crumpled the letter in my fist. My mother had been dead for five years, but I remembered the night my father died—the sudden heart attack, the rushed funeral, the strange look in Rachel’s eyes.

I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was hiding something.

Sophia found me in the study that evening, staring at the chess king.

“Papa, what’s wrong?”

I wanted to protect her from the ugliness, but she had already seen too much. I told her about the letter.

She was quiet for a moment, then said, “Grandpa had a safety deposit box. I remember him taking me there once, before he got sick.”

I looked at her. “What?”

“He showed me a key,” she said. “It was hidden in the back of his watch.”

I found the watch in my father’s old dresser, its gold case tarnished with age. Inside, a tiny key was taped to the back.

That afternoon, Sophia and I drove to the bank. The deposit box was in my name, but I had never known it existed.

Inside, we found a second will, dated three days before my father’s death. It was different from the one in the chess piece—it named Rachel as a beneficiary, but with a condition.

“I, Nathaniel Prescott the first, hereby bequeath to my daughter-in-law Rachel, the sum of one dollar, and the full knowledge that I have always known she was a conniving snake. The rest of my estate goes to my son and his rightful heir, Sophia.”

I laughed out loud, a deep, relieved laugh. My father had known Rachel would try something, and he had prepared for it.

But there was more. A handwritten note, addressed to me:

“Son, if you’re reading this, it means Rachel has finally shown her true colors. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to see her fall. But remember, the greatest legacy a man can leave is not his fortune, but his family. Protect Sophia with everything you have.”

I folded the note and tucked it into my pocket. Sophia looked up at me.

“Papa, what does it mean?”

“It means your grandfather was a very wise man,” I said. “And we have nothing to fear from Rachel anymore.”

In the weeks that followed, Rachel was convicted of fraud and attempted disinheritance. She was sentenced to ten years in prison. The tabloids had a field day, but I didn’t care. I had my daughter, and that was all that mattered.

Sophia and I moved into the ancestral home, her laughter filling the halls that had been silent for too long. We kept the chess king on the mantelpiece, a reminder of the truth that had set us free.

One evening, as we sat by the fire, Sophia asked, “Papa, do you think Grandpa is watching us?”

I smiled and wrapped my arm around her.

“I think he’s smiling down at us, sweetheart. And I think he’s proud.”

She leaned her head against my shoulder, and I felt a peace I hadn’t known in years. The past was behind us, and the future was bright.

As the flames crackled, I whispered to myself, “Family is everything.” And for the first time in a long time, I believed it.
