Previously: A crippled orphan girl, a forged heir, and a hidden birthmark. When Sophie whispered 'Look inside the false bottom,' the Sterling empire crumbled—and a mother’s truth emerged from the dark.

The Man Who Knew Too Much

The knock came again, harder this time. Arthur motioned for the guards to stay hidden, then walked to the door with Eleanor and Sophie behind him. He opened it to find a man standing on the threshold—a man in a black coat, his face half-hidden by a wide-brimmed hat.

"Mr. Sterling," the man said, his voice rough. "I believe you've been looking for your son."

Arthur's jaw tightened. "Who are you?"

"My name is Jameson," the man said. "I used to work for Blackthorne. I'm the one who took your son—but I couldn't go through with it. I left him at an orphanage in Virginia. I've been watching you ever since, waiting for the right time to come forward."

Eleanor stepped forward, her eyes blazing. "You took my son? You're the one who destroyed our family?"

Jameson held up his hands. "I know. I know what I did was unforgivable. But I was young, and I needed the money. Blackthorne promised me $100,000. He said your son would be taken care of, that he would be sent to a good family. But when I found out he wanted him dead—I couldn't do it."

"Dead?" Arthur's voice was barely a whisper.

Jameson nodded. "He wanted the boy dead. He wanted to make it look like the fire had killed him. But I couldn't. I took him to an orphanage and told Blackthorne he was dead. I faked the death certificate."

Sophie stepped forward, her crutch clicking on the stone floor. "You're the one who saved my brother?"

Jameson looked down at her, his eyes softening. "You're the girl, aren't you? The one he hid. I heard about you. I'm sorry I didn't do more."

Arthur's mind was racing. "Where is my son?"

Jameson reached into his coat and pulled out a photograph. It showed a boy of about twelve, standing in front of a small brick house, smiling. "He's in Virginia. He was adopted by a couple named the Hendersons. They don't know his real name. They think he's an orphan."

Eleanor took the photo, her hands shaking. "He's alive. My son is alive."

"He is," Jameson said. "And he's been waiting for you to find him. I knew you would eventually. That's why I came tonight. I wanted to be the one to tell you the truth, before Blackthorne could do anything else."

Arthur looked at his wife, then at Sophie. "We're going to Virginia. Tonight."

"Wait," Sophie said. "There's one more thing. Jameson, do you know anything about the crown birthmark?"

Jameson frowned. "The what?"

"The birthmark behind my ear," Sophie said. "It's the mark of the Sterling family. But there's a legend—that the first Sterling had it, and that it appears in every generation. My father told me about it. He said it was a sign that the true heir had been found."

Eleanor looked at Sophie, at the small mark behind her ear. "I never noticed it before," she said softly. "But now that I look, it's exactly like the one in my father's portrait."

Arthur smiled, a real smile, the first in years. "So we have two true heirs," he said. "A son we thought we lost, and a daughter we never knew we had."

They drove through the night, the headlights cutting through the darkness, Sophie nestled between her parents in the back seat. When they reached the Hendersons' house, the sun was just beginning to rise, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink.

The door opened, and a boy stepped out—a boy with Arthur's eyes and Eleanor's smile. He froze when he saw them, and Eleanor ran to him, wrapping her arms around him, sobbing into his shoulder.

"I'm your mother," she whispered. "I'm here. I found you."

The boy pulled back, his eyes wide. "Mom?"

Arthur joined them, pulling both his children into his arms. Sophie leaned against her brother's side, and for the first time, she felt like she belonged.

"We're a family," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "And nothing is ever going to tear us apart again."

As they stood there, the morning light warming their faces, Sophie looked up at her parents and smiled. The shadow was gone. She had finally stepped into the light.

And in that moment, she knew—the truth had set them all free.
