Previously: At a ball meant to silence gossip, Vanessa shamed wheelchair-bound Gabriel in front of everyone. But when he rose, the truth about Maya—and the night of the crash—shattered the room.

The Truth Unravels in a Single Whisper

I turned to Mrs. Whitmore, the elderly family friend who had known me since I was a boy. Her face was pale, her hands shaking as she pointed a trembling finger at Maya. 'That girl—she was in your car the night of the accident. I saw her pull you out of the wreckage.'

Maya's breath caught. She looked like a deer caught in headlights, and my heart hammered against my ribs. 'Is this true?' I demanded, my voice hoarse. 'You were there?'

Maya's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't look away. 'Yes,' she said, her voice barely above a whisper. 'I was on my way home from a late shift at the hospital. I saw your car flip, and I pulled you out. I called the ambulance and stayed with you until they arrived. But when the police came, I panicked. I ran. I didn't know who you were until I saw your picture in the paper three weeks later.'

Vanessa laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. 'Oh, how touching. The little waitress is a hero. But you still can't walk, darling. You're still a broken man.'

I turned to her, and something cold settled in my gut. 'Actually, Vanessa, I've been walking for three weeks now. I just wanted to see who would stay when they thought I couldn't. And you failed spectacularly.'

The room gasped. Vanessa's face went white, and Adrian took a step back. 'You—you've been faking it?' he stammered.

'Not faking,' I said, my voice ice. 'Rehabilitating. I've been working with a physical therapist every day, and I stood on my own for the first time two weeks ago. But I kept it a secret because I needed to know the truth about the people around me.'

I looked at Adrian, and my voice dropped. 'And you, my trusted partner, have been embezzling from my company for months. I have the forensic reports. You thought I was too busy feeling sorry for myself to notice, but I had my eyes on you the whole time.'

Adrian's face contorted. 'You can't prove anything.'

'My lawyers will be in touch tomorrow morning,' I said calmly. 'Now get out of my house—both of you.'

Vanessa opened her mouth to protest, but I cut her off. 'Take your red dress and your fake sympathy and leave. You're no longer welcome here.'

She stumbled backward, dragging Adrian with her, and the crowd parted to let them pass. The door slammed behind them, and the silence was deafening.

I turned back to Maya, who was still trembling. 'You saved my life,' I said softly, taking her hand again. 'And I spent six months feeling sorry for myself when I should have been thanking you.'

Maya shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks. 'I should have told you sooner. I was scared of what you'd think. I thought if I could just be near you, maybe I could make things right.'

'What things?' I asked, frowning.

Maya's eyes darted to Mrs. Whitmore, who was watching us intently. 'There's something else,' she said, her voice cracking. 'Something I've been hiding from you.'

My blood ran cold. 'What do you mean?'

Maya took a deep breath. 'The night of the accident, I wasn't just driving by. I was following you. I had been hired to watch you—by your business partner, Adrian.'

The words hit me like a punch to the gut. 'What?'

'He wanted dirt on you,' Maya continued, her voice shaking. 'He thought you were doing deals behind his back. I was a private investigator working undercover as a waitress. I was supposed to get close to you, find out your secrets. But then the accident happened, and I couldn't go through with it. I saved you, and I ran because I was ashamed of what I was doing.'

I stared at her, the pieces clicking into place. The scar on her cheek, the way she always seemed to be watching me. 'So this was all a lie?' I asked, my voice hollow.

'No,' Maya said fiercely, gripping my hands. 'The feelings are real. I fell in love with you, Gabriel. But I was too afraid to tell you the truth. I thought if I could just be near you, maybe I could make it right.'

I looked at Mrs. Whitmore, who was nodding slowly. 'She's telling the truth, Gabriel. I saw her at the hospital that night, but I didn't recognize her until tonight. She was the one who pulled you out of the car, but she was also the one who had been following you.'

I felt the ground shift beneath me. I had thought the worst was over, but now I was standing in the middle of a minefield with no idea which way to turn.
