The air in Le Grand Palais, Paris, hung thick with the scent of expensive perfume and even more expensive lies. Candlelight flickered, casting long, dancing shadows across the opulent dining room, glinting off crystal and polished mahogany. Outside, the Parisian rain lashed against the cathedral windows, a stark contrast to the suffocating warmth within. Vivian Beaumont, heir to the vast Beaumont yacht dynasty, swirled a glass of vintage Burgundy, his silvering hair slicked back, his bespoke silk tuxedo impeccable. His sneer was as sharp as his jawline.

Across from him sat Sarah, a stark anomaly in this sea of high society. Her face, tanned and weathered by sun and sea salt, was a testament to a life lived outdoors, a life Vivian had clearly tried to erase. Her sea-worn jacket, damp from the relentless rain, clung to her frame, a far cry from the silk and cashmere surrounding them. Her knuckles were bruised, her eyes, a piercing emerald, held a steely glint that even Vivian’s arrogance couldn’t quite extinguish.

"A drowned gutter rat begging for fuel credits?" Vivian’s voice dripped with disdain, laced with the amusement of a predator toying with its prey. "Your sunken galleon is a pathetic delusion, Sarah." He leaned forward, the candlelight illuminating the cruel twist of his lips.

Sarah remained silent, her jaw muscles tightening, her gaze locked onto his. She didn’t blink, didn’t flinch. She simply absorbed his venom, her breath hitched, a storm brewing behind her emerald eyes.

Vivian, sensing her stoic silence as weakness, snapped his fingers, adorned with diamond cufflinks, summoning a tuxedoed waiter. "Security," he commanded, his voice cutting through the hushed murmurs of scandalized neighbors. "Escort this sewer vagrant out before she drips bilge water onto my black truffles."

But Sarah wasn’t going anywhere. As droplets of water fell from her lashes, she shifted, hoisting a heavy, waterproof duffel bag onto her lap. The weight of it seemed to anchor her, a promise of what was to come. The game, Vivian thought, was almost over. He was wrong.
