Previously: A wealthy bully forces a pregnant waitress to scrub tea off the floor. But when the billionaire husband arrives, the tables turn in the most satisfying way.

The Deed Was Only the First Crack

The lounge erupted into whispers the moment Veronica was escorted out. Guests leaned over their champagne glasses, their voices hushed but hungry for details. I clutched Lorenzo’s jacket tighter, feeling the weight of his protection, but my mind was still spinning.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Lorenzo set Daisy down gently, then took my hands in his. His thumbs traced circles over my knuckles, a gesture I’d learned to read as his way of steadying himself. “I wanted to surprise you after the baby came. I bought it last year, when the board was about to sell to a competitor. I couldn’t let that happen. Not to the place where we first met.”

I remembered that night — a charity gala, me spilling red wine on his cufflinks, him laughing instead of scolding me. It felt like a lifetime ago.

“But Veronica,” I said, shaking my head. “She was so certain she could push me around. Why would she risk that?”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. “Because she didn’t know. No one does. I kept the ownership quiet to protect you — to keep you out of the spotlight.”

His phone buzzed, and he glanced at it, his expression darkening. “That was the board,” he said. “They’ve called an emergency meeting. Veronica has filed a formal complaint against you — employee misconduct, harassment, and theft.”

“Theft?” I almost laughed. “I didn’t steal anything.”

“She claims you stole her diamond earrings.” Lorenzo’s voice was flat. “She says they fell off when you ‘attacked’ her.”

My stomach dropped. The earrings. She was wearing them when she came in. I remembered them glinting in the light, but I never touched them.

“Security footage will clear me,” I said, but even as I said it, I saw the doubt in Lorenzo’s eyes.

“The cameras in that corner were down for maintenance,” he said. “It’s just your word against hers.”

Daisy tugged on my sleeve, her small face pinched with worry. “Mommy, is the bad lady coming back?”

I knelt down, my belly making it awkward, and pulled her into a hug. “No, sweetheart. She’s not going to hurt us.”

But I wasn’t sure I believed it.

Two hours later, I was sitting in the hotel’s private conference room, facing the board of directors. Veronica was there, her hair perfectly coiffed, a smug smile playing on her lips. She had a lawyer beside her, a sharp-suited man with a briefcase that probably cost more than my car.

“Ms. Sterling,” the board chairman began, “we have received a serious allegation. How do you respond?”

I opened my mouth, but Veronica cut me off. “She’s a liar,” she said, pointing at me. “She’s been stealing from guests for months. I have proof.”

She slid a photograph across the table. It showed me in the lounge, my hand near a guest’s purse, but the angle was wrong — I was just adjusting a napkin. Still, it looked damning.

Lorenzo stood up, his voice like thunder. “This is nonsense. My wife is the owner of this hotel. She doesn’t need to steal.”

Veronica’s lawyer smiled. “Actually, Mr. Sterling, we’ve done a background check. The deed might be in her name, but the trust that holds the property is managed by your family’s bank. And we have reason to believe the deed is a forgery.”

My blood ran cold. A forgery?

Lorenzo’s face went pale. “That’s absurd,” he said, but his voice lacked its usual confidence.

The chairman held up a document. “The signature on the deed doesn’t match the county records,” he said. “We’ve contacted the authorities. There will be an investigation.”

Veronica leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs. “I told you. She’s a fraud. And now, I’m going to make sure she loses everything.”

I looked at Lorenzo, searching his face for an answer. He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“Lorenzo?” I whispered. “What is she talking about?”

He finally looked at me, and I saw something I’d never seen before — fear.
