Previously: Eleanor faked paralysis to expose her son's fiancée, Amber. But when the police arrived, the real betrayal was revealed — and it wasn't Amber's. A shocking family twist.

"It was Uncle Marcus," I said, and the room went silent — but the revenge had only just begun.

"Uncle Marcus?" Eleanor repeated, her voice barely a whisper. "My son? He's been dead for two years."

I shook my head, tears streaming down my cheeks. "He's not dead, Grandma. He faked it. He wanted the money, and he used me to get it."

Amber's laugh died in her throat. She stared at me, her face pale. "What?"

"I saw him," I said, my voice shaking. "He said if I didn't help him, he'd hurt you. He made me install the program on your computer. He said it was for the family. He said it was to protect us."

Eleanor's face went through a dozen emotions in a single second — shock, grief, fury, and finally, something that looked like relief. She pulled me close, her hand cradling my head.

"Oh, my sweet girl," she whispered. "You should have told me."

"I was scared," I sobbed. "He said he'd take me away from you. He said he'd make sure you never saw me again."

The officer cleared his throat. "Ma'am, if what the girl says is true, we have evidence of a much larger scheme. We'll need to open a new investigation."

Eleanor straightened up, her eyes blazing. "Then do it. Find my son. And when you do, tell him his mother is waiting."

The officers nodded and began to move. But Amber wasn't done yet. She stepped forward, her hands shaking.

"Eleanor, please. I didn't know about Marcus. I thought... I thought I was protecting you from Hannah. I thought she was the thief."

Eleanor turned to her, her gaze cold as steel. "You thought an eight-year-old girl with a cochlear implant was embezzling millions?"

"I heard things!" Amber insisted. "I saw her on the computer late at night. I thought she was... I don't know..."

"You thought wrong," Eleanor said. "And now you'll pay for it."

She nodded to the officer, and he snapped the cuffs on Amber's wrists. But as they led her away, Eleanor held up her hand.

"Wait," she said. "Take the ring off first."

Amber froze. She looked down at the diamond on her finger — the engagement ring Eleanor had given her when she announced her marriage to my father. With shaking hands, she slipped it off and dropped it into Eleanor's palm.

"Good," Eleanor said softly. "Now go."

When the doors closed behind them, Eleanor sank to her knees and pulled me into her arms. We stayed like that for a long time, the rain streaking the glass panes around us, the bonsai trees silent witnesses to the truth.

"I'm sorry, Grandma," I whispered. "I should have told you."

"No," she said, stroking my hair. "You were protecting me. And that's more than anyone else has done in years."

She tilted my chin up so I could see her eyes. "But from now on, we're a team. You and me. No more secrets. No more tests. Just family."

I nodded, and for the first time in months, I felt safe.

Later that night, the police called. They had found Marcus at an airport in Mexico, boarding a flight to Brazil. He had a forged passport and a suitcase full of cash. He also had a note in his pocket, addressed to his mother.

Eleanor read it silently, then folded it and put it in her pocket.

"What does it say?" I asked.

She smiled — a sad, tired smile. "It says he's sorry. But some apologies come too late."

She looked at me, and her eyes glistened. "I've spent my whole life building a fortune, Hannah. But the only thing that matters is the family I have left. And that's you."

She squeezed my hand. "So let this be the end of secrets. From now on, we live honestly. We love fiercely. And we never, ever let anyone make us feel helpless again."

I smiled through my tears. "Deal."

And as the rain cleared and the first stars appeared above the glass rafters, I knew that no matter what came next, we would face it together.
