Previously: Claire was supposed to be unconscious, but she heard every word. When her crooked lawyer tried to tear up the will, she opened her eyes—and exposed a betrayal no one saw coming.

The Name on the Paper

The police station was cold and sterile, the fluorescent lights humming overhead.

Claire sat across from Detective Marlow, a no-nonsense woman with sharp eyes and a tired expression. Emma was in the waiting room, sipping hot chocolate from a vending machine cup, her small hands still trembling.

"We've got enough to hold Sterling on fraud and attempted theft," Marlow said, flipping through a file. "But he's lawyered up, and he's not talking. He's demanding to see you."

Claire crossed her arms. "Let him wait."

"There's something else," Marlow said, lowering her voice. "When we searched Sterling's office, we found this." She slid a manila envelope across the table.

Claire opened it, her heart pounding. Inside was a single photograph—a woman with dark hair and a cruel smile, standing next to Sterling at a gala. The woman was her sister, Evelyn.

"Your sister," Marlow said. "She's been seen with Sterling multiple times over the past few months."

Claire's stomach dropped. Evelyn had always been jealous of her, but this—this was beyond jealousy. This was conspiracy.

"The accident," Claire whispered. "The car that hit me. It wasn't an accident, was it?"

Marlow shook her head. "We're pulling the black box from your car. But Sterling's phone records show a call to a known mechanic the day before the crash. We're looking into it."

Claire stood up, her mind racing. "I need to go home. I need to check something."

She found Emma asleep in the waiting room, her head resting on a stack of old magazines. Claire gently woke her, and they drove back to the estate in silence.

The estate was dark when they arrived. Claire moved through the halls with a flashlight, her footsteps echoing on the marble floors. She went to the bookshelf in her study, the one with the secret compartment she'd hidden from everyone except Sterling.

She opened it, and her breath caught.

The compartment was empty.

"He took it," she whispered. "He took the backup will."

Emma clutched her arm. "But we have the original. I saved it—"

"No," Claire said, her voice hard. "Sterling ripped it in half. We have pieces, but without the backup, we have nothing. The forged will becomes the legal document."

Emma's eyes filled with tears. "What are we going to do?"

Claire was about to answer when her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number:

"I told you this wasn't over. Check the cameras."

Claire's blood ran cold. She tapped on the security app, scrolling through the footage from the past few days. There, in grainy black-and-white, she saw a figure in a hooded coat entering the study at 3 AM—Evelyn.

"She's here," Claire said. "She's in the house."

Emma screamed as the lights flickered and went out.
