Previously: Evelyn pretended to be paralyzed to expose her husband Devon's greed. But when he threatened their daughter, she stood up — and the truth shattered everything.

The Secret He Thought He'd Buried Was About to Surface

Devon's hands were cuffed behind his back, but he wasn't done fighting. He fixed me with a desperate, wild-eyed stare as the officers read him his rights. "You think you've won?" he spat. "You have no idea what I've done for you—what I've sacrificed!"

I didn't flinch. "You've sacrificed nothing but my trust and our marriage."

The officers started to lead him away, but he twisted around, his voice rising. "Ask her about the DNA test!" he shouted, jerking his chin toward Zoe. "Ask her why her blood type doesn't match mine!"

The room went silent. Zoe looked up at me, her brow furrowed, her small hand tightening on my arm. I felt a chill run down my spine. I knew exactly what he was trying to do — throw mud at the wall and hope something stuck. But the officers paused, looking at me with new curiosity.

"He's lying," I said calmly. "He's just trying to cause chaos."

But Devon laughed, a hollow, bitter sound. "I'm not lying. I had a test done years ago, when I suspected you were hiding something. The results are in my safety deposit box at the bank. Go check. You'll see that little Zoe isn't mine."

My heart stopped. I felt the room tilt, and I had to steady myself against the table. Zoe's eyes searched my face, looking for reassurance I couldn't give her. I'd never doubted that Zoe was my daughter — she had my eyes, my stubbornness, my laugh. But Devon's words planted a seed of doubt that began to sprout immediately.

"He's trying to hurt you," I said, kneeling down to Zoe's level. "Don't listen to him."

But she pulled away, her face crumpling. "Is it true? Am I not his daughter?"

"You are my daughter," I said, my voice cracking. "That's all that matters."

The officers exchanged a look, then one of them spoke. "Ma'am, we need to take him in for the charges. But you might want to look into that DNA claim. It could affect custody."

I nodded numbly, watching them drag Devon out of the boardroom. The door swung shut, and I was alone with Zoe, who was now crying silently, her little body shaking. I pulled her into my arms, holding her tight, my mind racing.

The next morning, I went to the bank. I found Devon's safety deposit box and opened it with the key I'd taken from his office. Inside, there was a manila envelope, worn at the edges. I opened it with trembling hands, and there it was — a DNA test report, dated six years ago, showing that Devon was not Zoe's biological father.

I read it three times, the words blurring. I'd had no idea. I'd never cheated on Devon — I'd been faithful for fourteen years. But the test was real, and it meant something I couldn't ignore: someone else was Zoe's father. But who?

I thought back to the months before Zoe was born. I remembered a brief, confusing period when I'd been drugged at a party, waking up with no memory of what had happened. I'd always thought it was just a bad night. But now, I realized it might have been something more sinister.

I called my lawyer, and together we started digging. It took two weeks, but we found the truth. The DNA test had been commissioned by Devon, not because he suspected me, but because he was covering his own tracks. The real father was a man named Jack, a former colleague of mine who had died in a car accident years ago. And Devon had known all along — he'd used that information to control me, threatening to expose "my secret" if I ever tried to leave him.

I was furious. I was devastated. But I was also free.
