Betrayal in the Deep Jungle

The air in the Amazon basin was thick and heavy, smelling of damp earth and rotting vegetation. Clara Vance, seventy-one years old and wearing her favorite teal floral dress, clutched the edges of the narrow wooden canoe. She had agreed to this trip to mend fences with her son, Julian, and his wife, Evelyn. But looking at the murky brown river winding through the dense canopy, a deep sense of dread settled in her chest. Julian, forty-seven, rowed steadily, his brow furrowed with exhaustion, while Evelyn, her ash-blonde hair tucked under a straw sun hat, stared at Clara with cold, unblinking eyes.

Without warning, the tense silence shattered. Evelyn lunged forward, her face contorting into a mask of pure malice. She grabbed Clara by the shoulders and shoved her violently over the low gunwale of the canoe.

"Go down to the river with the crocodiles!" Evelyn screamed, her voice a manic, high-pitched screech.

Clara fell backward, the muddy water engulfing her instantly. She gasped, swallowing the brackish river water as she broke the surface. From the boat, Julian's horrified voice echoed through the trees.

"No! What are you doing?" he screamed, frantically trying to balance the rocking canoe.

But the horror was only beginning. Just yards away, the prehistoric snout of a massive black caiman broke the surface, its yellow eyes locking onto the splashing elderly woman. Clara swam frantically, her heavy wet dress dragging her down like a lead weight. Every stroke was a battle against the current and the overwhelming terror of the predator closing the gap behind her. She could hear the snap of its jaws, a terrifying sound that promised a brutal end. Julian screamed her name, but Evelyn held him back, her laughter echoing like a nightmare in the wild jungle.
