Previously: Sophie dove in front of the runaway carriage, scraping her knee bloody. But Veronica swore she let go. Then Liam pulled up the nanny-cam footage that changed everything.

The Threat That Followed Us Home

The mansion fell into a tense silence after the guards took Veronica away. Adrian called for a doctor to tend to my knee, but I barely felt the sting of the antiseptic. My mind was elsewhere, replaying that smile on Veronica's face as she was led off the terrace.

That night, I lay awake in my small room above the garage, listening to the waves crash against the cliffs below Newport. Mia was asleep in her nursery, monitored by a baby monitor I'd insisted on keeping by my bed. Liam had been quiet at dinner, picking at his food, his eyes darting to the windows as if expecting someone to appear.

"Sophie?" His voice came from the doorway, small and uncertain. I sat up, and he padded over to the bed, crawling in beside me. "Do you think Veronica will come back?"

"No," I said, pulling him close. "The police have her. She can't hurt us."

But even as I said it, I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. Something about the way she'd looked at me—not with anger, but with a cold, calculated calm—told me this wasn't the end.

The next morning, Adrian had a team of security experts sweep the estate. They found three more hidden cameras, all connected to Veronica's private cloud. The nanny-cam in the flowerpot was just one of them. The experts also found a burner phone in Veronica's closet, its screen still glowing with a message: "The au pair has a record. Dig deeper."

Adrian handed me the phone, his jaw tight. "Do you know what this means?"

I shook my head, reading the message again. "She was planning something else. Something worse."

"She had a private investigator on you," Adrian said. "He's been digging into your past for weeks."

My blood ran cold. I thought about my life before Newport—the small apartment in Boston, the string of part-time jobs, the reason I'd left my last au pair position in such a hurry. I'd never told Adrian the full story, and now I was terrified he'd find out.

"What did he find?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Adrian hesitated, then handed me a folder. Inside was a single page, a copy of an old court document. It was a restraining order—filed by my previous employer, a wealthy woman in Beacon Hill, accusing me of endangering her child.

"It's not what it looks like," I said quickly, my heart racing. "That family—the father was the one who hurt the child. I tried to protect him, and she blamed me to cover it up."

Adrian studied me for a long moment. "I believe you, Sophie. But this document could be used against you. If Veronica's lawyer gets it, she could paint you as a risk to Mia."

I felt the walls closing in. "What do I do?"

He squeezed my hand. "We fight. Together."

An Unlikely Alliance

The next week was a blur of lawyers and police interviews. Veronica was out on bail, her high-priced attorney spinning the story to the press. The tabloids had a field day: "Au Pair's Dark Past Exposed" and "Nanny Accused of Endangerment—Again."

I stopped reading the headlines, but I couldn't escape the whispers. The other staff avoided me, and even the mailman looked at me differently. The only ones who stood by me were Adrian, Liam, and little Mia, who still reached for me every morning with her chubby arms.

Then, late one night, I got a call from an unknown number. I almost didn't answer, but something made me pick up.

"Sophie?" The voice was male, familiar but strained. "It's Daniel. Mia's father."

I froze. Daniel was the father from my last job—the one I'd tried to protect. "Why are you calling me?"

"I heard what's happening in Newport," he said, his voice tight. "I couldn't stay silent anymore. I'm coming forward to tell the truth about what happened at our house."

I felt a spark of hope. "You'd do that?"

"I owe you, Sophie. You saved my son's life, and I let my wife ruin yours to save my marriage. I can't live with that guilt anymore."

He flew in the next day, meeting with Adrian's lawyers and the police. His testimony was damning: his ex-wife had fabricated the abuse claims to hide her own neglect, and I had been the one to call child services. The restraining order was a lie, filed to silence me.

With Daniel's testimony, the case against Veronica collapsed. Her lawyer withdrew, and she was rearrested, this time with no bail. The tabloids flipped their narrative: "Hero Nanny Vindicated" and "Stepmother's Web of Lies Unravels."

But Veronica wasn't finished. From her jail cell, she sent me a letter, scrawled in angry red ink. "You think you've won?" it read. "You'll never be safe. I know things about Adrian that would destroy him. And I'll make sure the whole world knows."

I read the letter three times, my hands shaking. What could she possibly know about Adrian? And why did she sound so certain?

I tucked the letter into my pocket and went to find Adrian. It was time to tell him everything—including the secret I'd been carrying since the day I arrived.
