Previously: When Claire dove in front of the runaway carriage to save baby Lucas, she thought it was an accident. But the nanny-cam footage proved Cassandra set the brake loose — and Dominic's fury was only the beginning.

The Truth That Set Them Free

They left the jail in a cold drizzle. Dominic didn't speak until they reached the car. Then he turned to Claire, his eyes wet. “I don't know how to thank you. You saved Lucas twice today — once from the carriage, and once from the truth.”

Claire shook her head. “I didn't do anything. Eleanor did. She left that letter for a reason.”

Dominic stared at the rain on the windshield. “Charles was my older brother. He was the golden child — charming, brilliant, loved by everyone. I was the awkward one, the one who had to work twice as hard for everything. When he died, I thought my heart would never recover. And then Eleanor came into my life, and she was so kind, so patient. She never told me about Charles.”

“She loved you,” Claire said gently. “In her own way. She just couldn't tell you the truth.”

Dominic laughed, a hollow sound. “And now I'm left to raise a son who isn't mine. But I don't care. Lucas is mine. He's been mine since the day I held him in this hospital. Nothing Cassandra says will change that.”

They drove back to the mansion in silence. The rain had stopped, and the first rays of dawn were painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. Claire helped Henry get ready for school, then went to the nursery to check on Lucas.

He was awake, sitting up in his crib, babbling to his stuffed bear. When he saw Claire, he held out his arms. She lifted him, breathing in the scent of baby powder and warm skin. “You're going to be okay, little one,” she whispered. “You're going to be so loved.”

Later that week, the custody hearing was held. Cassandra sat in the defendant's chair, her lawyer beside her, her face a mask of cold defiance. Dominic's lawyer presented the nanny-cam footage, the letter, and the birth certificate. The judge read them all in silence.

“The court finds that Cassandra Ashford is a clear and present danger to the child,” the judge announced. “Her parental rights are hereby terminated. Dominic Ashford is granted full legal and physical custody. Cassandra Ashford is remanded to the state penitentiary to serve a sentence of no less than twenty-five years for attempted murder and conspiracy.”

Cassandra's eyes widened. “You can't do this! I'm his aunt! I have rights!”

The judge banged his gavel. “Your rights are revoked. Bailiff, remove her.”

As the guards dragged her away, Cassandra looked back at Claire, her eyes burning with hatred. “This isn't over,” she hissed. “I have people who will —”

Dominic stood, his voice cold and final. “You have nothing. You're going to prison for the rest of your life. And Lucas will never know your name.”

The courtroom erupted in whispers, but Claire didn't hear them. She was watching Lucas, who was sitting on Dominic's lap, playing with a toy car. He looked up at his father and smiled — a wide, trusting smile that made Claire's heart ache.

After the hearing, they stood on the courthouse steps. The sun was bright, the sky a perfect blue. Dominic turned to Claire, his expression soft. “I want you to stay. Not as a nanny — as family. Henry loves you. Lucas loves you. And I…” He trailed off, his voice rough. “I don't know what I'd do without you.”

Claire felt tears prick her eyes. “I don't know what to say.”

“Say you'll stay,” Dominic said. “Say you'll be part of our lives. Not because you have to, but because you want to.”

Claire looked at Henry, who was grinning from ear to ear. At Lucas, who was reaching for her with chubby arms. And at Dominic, whose eyes held a hope she hadn't seen before.

“Yes,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I'll stay.”

Dominic pulled her into a hug, and for the first time in days, Claire felt safe. She had come to Newport looking for a job. She had found a family.

As they drove home, Henry leaned over and whispered, “I'm glad you're staying, Claire. You're the best nanny ever.”

“I'm not just a nanny anymore,” she said, ruffling his hair. “I'm your family.”

And in that moment, she knew she had finally found her place.

The rest of the summer passed in a blur of lemonade on the terrace, games of tag in the garden, and quiet evenings reading to Lucas. Dominic and Claire grew closer, their love blooming slowly, like the roses in the estate's greenhouse. And every night, before bed, Claire would look at the letter from Eleanor and whisper a silent thank you.

Sometimes the truth is the hardest thing to face. But it's the only thing that sets you free.
