Previously: Beatrice forged a disinheritance codicil to steal my daughter's inheritance. But Chloe had proof hidden in a sealed envelope — and when I broke the seal, the truth shattered us all.

The 99.99% That Broke Her Smile

The paper inside was crisp, official, stamped with the lab's gold seal. I unfolded it slowly, the way you'd handle a bomb, and scanned the numbers: 99.99% probability of biological paternity. Chloe was my brother's daughter. My blood.

But there was more—a second page, a forensic ink analysis report. The codicil Beatrice had presented was printed yesterday, on a laser printer from her own home office. The ink matched a sample from her personal stash. The document was a forgery, as fake as her grief.

"This official seal proves everything," I said, holding the paper up for the judge to see. My voice rang through the chamber like a bell. "This DNA test—conducted by an accredited Swiss lab—confirms Chloe is my brother's child. And this ink analysis proves the codicil was fabricated yesterday."

All color drained from Beatrice's face. Her lips parted, then closed, then parted again like a fish gasping for air. Sweat beaded on her temples, and I watched her carefully constructed world crumble in real time.

"That's—that's a fake!" she sputtered, pointing at the envelope. "She planted it! The child is a liar!"

"The child," I said, stepping closer, "is the only honest person in this room."

The judge called for a recess and summoned the bailiff. I could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on me, but also a strange lightness—the truth was finally out, and it was shining so bright it burned.

Chloe exhaled softly, a tiny sound of relief that nearly broke me. I pulled her into my arms, feeling her small body shake against my chest. "I've got you," I whispered into her pigtails. "I've always got you."

But Beatrice wasn't done fighting. She lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the table, her voice rising to a shriek. "You think you've won? You think this is over? I have evidence—evidence that your brother was not the man you thought he was!"

She reached into her bag and pulled out a crumpled photograph, waving it like a flag of surrender. "He had another family! A secret wife in Nevada! You're not the only one who mourns him—he betrayed us all!"

The room erupted in gasps. I stared at the photo—my brother, smiling, arm around a woman I'd never seen before, a ring on her finger that wasn't my sister-in-law's.

My heart stopped. Chloe looked up at me, confusion and fear in her eyes. "Daddy?" she whispered, and the word hit me like a punch to the gut.

I didn't know what was true anymore. But I knew one thing: Beatrice had just handed me a knife to cut her own throat. Because if my brother had a secret family, that meant the legal claim to his estate was even more complicated—and her forged codicil was just the tip of the iceberg.

I turned to the judge. "Your Honor, I request a full investigation into Mrs. Cross's affairs, including her bank records, her communications, and her relationship with the lab that produced the original DNA test."

Beatrice's face went white. She knew what that meant. She'd forged more than a will—she'd bribed a lab technician, paid off a nurse, and fabricated a trail of evidence to steal a child's inheritance. And now the truth was unraveling faster than she could stitch it back together.

The bailiff stepped forward, handcuffs glinting in the light. "Beatrice Cross, you are under arrest for fraud, forgery, and attempted theft of a minor's inheritance."

She screamed, she fought, she clawed at the air—but the officers were quick, and they dragged her out with her heels scraping against the marble floor. The last thing I saw was her face contorted in rage, and I felt a cold satisfaction settle in my bones.

But the photograph was still in my hand.

And I had no idea what it meant.
