A Rainy Day Discovery

The steady rhythm of rain drumming against the glass of the quiet family-owned jewelry store was the only sound keeping Arthur company. Wearing his signature tweed vest, the elderly jeweler polished a silver tray, his mind wandering to memories he had tried for fifteen years to bury. It was a slow, melancholic afternoon—until the bell above the door chimed, cutting through the silence.

A young woman stumbled inside, shivering. She wore a bright yellow raincoat, slick with water, and her auburn hair clung to her pale, distressed face. She looked desperate, her eyes scanning the shop before landing on Arthur. Hurrying to the counter, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a delicate, worn gold locket.

"How much will you give me for this necklace?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Arthur took the piece gently. He recognized the craftsmanship immediately—it was a vintage design, rare and beautifully detailed. He inspected the gold locket under his loupe, noting the faint scratches of time. Though it was worth more, business had been brutal, and he had to be practical.

"I'll give you fifty, not more," Arthur said softly, expecting her to negotiate.

To his surprise, the tearful young woman didn't hesitate.

"Okay, deal," she whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek.

Arthur counted out the bills, but as she reached for the money, curiosity got the better of him. He gently pried open the locket's hinge. His breath hitched. Staring back at him from the tiny faded photograph was a bright-eyed little girl with the exact same auburn hair, holding a plush teddy bear. It was a photo he had taken himself, a lifetime ago.

The money slipped from his fingers. He looked up, but the door was already swinging shut. Arthur rushed past the counter, his heart hammering against his ribs. He threw open the door and called out into the rain.

"That necklace... It belongs to my daughter! My missing daughter... Clara?"

The young woman froze on the wet pavement, turning back to him in pure shock.
