She Stood Up From Her Wheelchair to Dance, but Her Stepmother's Secret Almost Ruined Everything
Previously: When 19-year-old Charlotte stood up on her running-blade prosthetics to dance, the ballroom gasped. But her bitter stepmother was waiting in the shadows with a secret that threatened to ruin her future.
The Shadow in the Ballroom
The music abruptly halted as Eleanor, Charlotte’s stepmother, stepped onto the dance floor. Dressed in a sharp, blood-red gown, her face was twisted into a triumphant sneer. In her manicured hand, she clutched a yellowed legal document. The guests silenced instantly, the joyful atmosphere evaporating into a tense, heavy dread.
"Stop this pathetic charade at once!" Eleanor hissed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Do you honestly think a pair of metal blades changes anything, Charlotte?"
Arthur stepped forward, his tear-streaked face hardening with anger. "Eleanor, what is the meaning of this? This is Charlotte's night! She is finally walking—she is dancing!"
"She is playing pretend," Eleanor retorted, waving the papers in the air. "I have the late patriarch's will right here. To inherit the family estate and her medical trust, Charlotte had to 'walk independently on her own two feet' by her twentieth birthday. Today is that day. And these..." She pointed a manicured finger at Charlotte's running blades. "...are machines. They are not her own feet. Therefore, by legal definition, she has failed the clause, and the entire inheritance defaults to me."
A murmur of horror ran through the crowd. Charlotte clung to Alexander, her heart sinking into her chest. The prosthetics had been her secret hope, a grueling six months of agonizing physical therapy that she had endured just to prove she could live a full life. Now, her cruel stepmother was using her tragedy to strip away her future.
Arthur looked defeated, knowing how strict the family lawyers had been when drafting the old will. "Eleanor, please, have some mercy," he pleaded. "She lost her legs in the fire. You can't do this to her."
"The law has no mercy, Arthur," Eleanor laughed coldly. "The money is mine."
But Alexander didn't back down. Instead, he stepped between Eleanor and Charlotte, a knowing smile playing on his lips.
