The moment the formal ceremony concluded and the crowd began to disperse, Avery marched toward the rear of Hangar 4. She didn't care about the congratulations of her peers or the medals waiting for her. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She rounded the corner of the massive steel building, and there he was, leaning against the corrugated metal wall, waiting for her just as she knew he would.

Avery stopped five paces away, her posture rigid, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. The anger that had simmered inside her for over a decade finally boiled over.

"Why are you here, Caleb?"

she demanded, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady.

"You have no right to stand on this base. You have no right to look at me."

Caleb didn't flinch. He looked at her with a mixture of pride and profound sadness. "I couldn't miss seeing you take command, Avery," he said softly, his voice raspy. "You look just like your mother."

"Do not speak her name!"

Avery snapped, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with betrayal.

"You left us. You walked out on your unit, you walked out on your country, and you walked out on a ten-year-old girl who cried herself to sleep for years. They called you a coward, Caleb. And today, I wear this uniform to erase the stain you left on our family name."

Caleb closed his eyes for a brief moment, absorbing the venom in her words. When he opened them, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a battered, faded manila envelope. "I didn't expect you to forgive me, Avery," he whispered, holding it out to her. "But you deserve to know what really happened in the valley fifteen years ago. Read this, and then, if you still want me to disappear forever, I will."
