The silence in the courtyard was broken by the sharp trill of the principal’s whistle. Within minutes, both girls were marched straight to Principal Vance’s office. Hailey was sobbing hysterically, holding an ice pack to her hip and loudly demanding that Zoe be expelled and arrested. Zoe sat quietly in the opposite chair, her expression unreadable, her posture perfectly straight.

Arthur sighed deeply, looking at Eleanor with a mixture of disappointment and pity. The truth was far darker than schoolyard jealousy. For the past year, Eleanor had been working as the head housekeeper and estate manager for the Sterling family. Hailey’s entire high society lifestyle was a carefully constructed lie.
