Previously: Greedy mistress Vanessa forged a custody waiver to strip Lily of her birthright. But when a 7-year-old presents a sealed DNA report, the billionaire patriarch uncovers a shocking truth that changes everything.

The Midnight Call That Unraveled a Deeper Conspiracy

That night, after I'd tucked Lily into bed and watched her drift into a peaceful sleep, I sat alone in my study with the note spread out before me. The words seemed to burn into my retinas, each line revealing a new layer of betrayal.

"Vanessa is Lily's biological aunt," her mother had written. "She's been trying to get custody since Lily was born. She forged documents, bribed officials, even set up the car accident that killed me. I have proof. It's all in the safety deposit box. But you must find it before she does."

My hands trembled as I read those words again. Vanessa—the woman I'd let into my home, my bed, my life—was responsible for the death of the woman I'd loved? And she'd been scheming to take Lily all along?

I didn't want to believe it. But the DNA test she'd presented today had been a lie, and the receipt proved she'd paid off the lab clerk. What else was she capable of?

I reached for my phone to call my lawyer, but it buzzed before I could dial. An unknown number flashed on the screen. I hesitated for a moment, then answered.

"Julian Sterling," a smooth, unfamiliar voice said. "I think we need to talk."

"Who is this?" I demanded.

"A friend of your late wife's. I have information about Vanessa—information that could destroy her. But I need to meet you in person. Tonight. The old pier, by the abandoned warehouse. Come alone."

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone, my mind racing. It could be a trap. But if there was even a chance that this person had the proof I needed, I couldn't ignore it.

I grabbed my coat and slipped out into the night, the city's lights reflecting off the harbor as I drove to the pier. The warehouse loomed ahead, dark and foreboding. I parked and walked to the entrance, my footsteps echoing on the wet concrete.

Inside, a single bulb flickered overhead, casting harsh shadows on the walls. A man stood in the center, his face half-hidden by a hood. He turned as I approached, and I recognized him instantly—the private lab clerk Vanessa had bribed.

"You," I said, my fists clenching. "You helped her forge that test."

"I had no choice," he said, his voice shaking. "She threatened my family. But when I saw you take her down today, I knew I had to make things right."

He held out a USB drive. "This is everything. The original lab results, the fake ones, the wire transfers, the emails. She's been planning this for years."

I took the drive, my fingers closing around it like a lifeline. "Why should I trust you?"

"Because your wife was my sister," he said, pulling back his hood. "And I've been carrying this guilt for too long."

I stared at him, my mind reeling. "Lily's mother was your sister?"

He nodded. "Vanessa is our stepsister. She's been obsessed with your family's wealth since she was a child. She thought she could take Lily, and with her, your fortune. But she underestimated you."

"She underestimated Lily," I corrected, my voice low. "My daughter is braver than any of us."

I drove home with the USB drive burning a hole in my pocket. The evidence was damning—emails, receipts, and even a voice recording of Vanessa bragging about her plan to a friend.

But the drive also contained something else. A video file, timestamped the night Lily's mother died. I opened it on my laptop, my heart pounding.

The footage showed Vanessa tampering with the brakes of a silver sedan. The same sedan that had crashed into a tree, killing Lily's mother instantly.

I slammed my fist on the desk, rage boiling inside me. "She killed her. She killed the only woman I ever loved."

But as I watched the video again, I noticed something in the background. A figure standing in the shadows, watching Vanessa with a knowing smile. It was a woman I didn't recognize—but her face was etched into my memory.

I called my lawyer the next morning and laid out the evidence. "I want Vanessa arrested for murder," I said. "And I want custody of Lily to be legally airtight."

"Julian," my lawyer said, his voice hesitant. "There's something you need to know. The DNA test you found—the one that proves you're Lily's father—it's not the only one."

"What do you mean?"

"I did a little digging after you called me. The original test, the one your wife ordered before she died, it didn't come back until after her death. And it wasn't addressed to you. It was addressed to Lily's biological father."

My blood ran cold. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying," my lawyer said slowly, "that the DNA test you have might not be yours. It might be someone else's."

I gripped the phone so hard it creaked. "Who?"

"I don't know yet. But the results were sent to a P.O. box in another state. And the name on the box is registered to a woman who died five years ago."

I felt the ground shift beneath me. My wife had been hiding something. Something that could change everything.

I looked at the USB drive, then at the note, then at the photo of Lily on my desk. Her innocent smile seemed to mock me.

"Find out," I said. "Find out who Lily's real father is."

But deep down, I knew the truth would be even more devastating than I could imagine.
