Previously: Diana slammed down a forged blood test, claiming my son wasn't mine. But Leo held the one thing she never expected — a sealed hospital cylinder that would shatter her lies forever.

The Mastermind in the Shadows

The words hung in the air like poison: "The real mastermind is still in this room." I looked around at the faces of my family — my brother James, my sister Sarah, and my own mother, Margaret, all seated around the brass-inlaid table.

James shifted in his chair, his tie loosened. Sarah was staring at her hands. But my mother — my mother was unnaturally calm, her hands folded neatly on her lap.

Judge Vance broke the silence. "Mr. Harrington, I suggest we get to the bottom of this before anyone else leaves."

I nodded, my mind racing. Diana was a gold-digger, yes, but she wasn't smart enough to forge a hospital blood-type chart. Someone had helped her.

"Mom," I said slowly, turning to her, "you always hated Diana. But you also never approved of Leo."

Margaret's eyes widened. "How dare you!" she snapped. "I am his grandmother!"

"Then why did you ask me to change my will last week?" I pressed. "Why did you insist that Leo's inheritance go to a trust you control?"

Sarah gasped. "Mother, you didn't!"

Margaret stood up, her chair scraping the floor. "I did it for this family!" she cried. "Diana was a gold-digger, but at least she wasn't a bastard's mother!"

Leo flinched at the word. My blood boiled.

"Leo is my son," I said, stepping between them. "And you — you've been lying to me my whole life, haven't you?"

Margaret's face twisted. "I was protecting you from that woman! But no, you had to go and get her pregnant. And then you brought that child into MY house!"

Judge Vance raised a hand. "Mrs. Harrington, did you or did you not conspire with Diana to forge Leo's paternity test?"

Margaret's mouth opened, but no words came out. James looked at her in horror.

"Answer the question," the judge pressed.

"I... I just wanted what was best for Richard," Margaret whispered. "Diana promised she'd keep him away from the boy after she married him. She said she'd take care of everything."

My heart shattered. My own mother — the woman who raised me — had tried to steal my son's future.

"You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud," Judge Vance said, and two more officers stepped forward.

Margaret let out a wail as they cuffed her. "Richard! Forgive me! I was just trying to protect you!"

I turned away, unable to look at her. Leo tugged my sleeve. "Daddy, is Grandma going to jail?"

I knelt down, my eyes watering. "She made a terrible mistake, buddy. But you're safe now. I promise."

Judge Vance packed up the evidence and handed me a card. "Mr. Harrington, your son is a brave young man. I suggest you keep that cylinder somewhere safe."

I looked at the silver cylinder, now empty of its explosive contents. It had saved my son's future.

But as we left the building, I couldn't shake the feeling that Diana's words still echoed in the air. Was there another mastermind — someone even closer to me? And what would they do when they found out their plan had failed?
