Once Mark untied the thick hemp rope, Clara collapsed forward into his arms. The playful bantering faded instantly, replaced by the heavy silence of the wilderness. Mark held his sister tightly, realizing for the first time how light she felt. Her military uniform, once fitting her perfectly, now hung loosely on her frame.

"Clara, what's really going on?"

Mark whispered, his voice laced with sudden concern as the other deputies stepped back to give them privacy.

"You didn't answer our letters for six months. Dad has been worried sick. And why did we find you out here by the old ridge instead of at the station?"

Clara wiped her damp cheeks, her fingers trembling. She reached into the inner pocket of her olive jacket and pulled out a folded, official-looking document, its edges crinkled. She handed it to her brother. Mark unfolded the paper, his eyes scanning the military letterhead. His face grew pale, the color draining faster than the winter light.

The document was an honorable discharge, but not for completed service. It was a medical release. Clara had been diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition triggered by an environmental exposure during her final tour. She was losing the fine motor skills in her hands—the very hands that had made her one of the army's top surgical nurses.

"I couldn't tell Dad over the phone,"

Clara confessed, her voice cracking.

"And I couldn't bear to walk into the ranch house feeling like a failure. I wanted to come to our childhood spot first. I wanted to remember what it felt like to be strong."

But the medical discharge wasn't the only secret Clara brought back to Montana. As Mark stared at the paper in disbelief, Deputy Higgins stepped forward, holding a tablet.
