Previously: On a freezing winter day, a shivering barefoot woman is approached by a little girl with a life-changing request. But when the girl's father steps forward, a devastating secret from their past unravels.

The Ghost of the Past

Before Jessica could process the little girl's words, Robert stepped forward from the shadows. His face, partially hidden by his thick beard, was pale with shock. He stared at Jessica not as if she were a stranger on the street, but as if he were looking at a ghost. He took a faltering step, his boots heavy in the snow, and gasped her name.

"Jessica? Is it... is it really you?" Robert whispered, his voice trembling.

Jessica looked up, her eyes widening as she finally recognized the man behind the beard. Memories rushed back to her in a dizzying torrent—memories of a life she had lost five years ago. Robert had been her husband, the love of her life. But after a devastating car accident that had put Jessica into a coma, she had woken up to a living nightmare. Robert's wealthy, controlling mother had told her that her newborn baby girl had not survived, and threatened her to leave the city forever, claiming Robert had already moved on and blamed her for the tragedy.

Heartbroken and deeply depressed, Jessica had spiraled, eventually losing everything and ending up on the streets. She had no idea that Robert had been told an equally monstrous lie.

"Robert..." Jessica sobbed, pulling the cardigan tighter around her. "Your mother... she told me our baby died. She told me you hated me."

Robert fell to his knees in the snow, grabbing Jessica's freezing hands. Tears streamed down his face, melting the frost on his cheeks.

"No, oh God, no!" Robert cried. "She told me you abandoned us! She said you took a settlement and ran away because you didn't want to be a mother. I've been raising Ella alone, searching for you, praying that one day I would find the truth."

Jessica looked from Robert to Ella, who was watching them with wide, innocent eyes. The realization hit her like a physical blow. Ella was the daughter she thought she had buried five years ago. She was alive, healthy, and standing right in front of her.
