Previously: When cold and hungry Melissa is approached by a sweet little girl in a yellow coat, she expects a simple act of charity—not a life-altering proposal that changes everything.

An Unexpected Recognition

Before Melissa could process the little girl's heartbreaking words, Matthew quickly stepped forward, his boots crunching loudly in the snow. His face was flushed, a mix of embarrassment and concern painted across his features as he gently reached for his daughter's hand.

"Natalie, sweetie, we don't just say things like that to people," Matthew said gently, before looking up to apologize to Melissa. "I am so sorry. She didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. We lost her mother last year, and—"

Matthew cut himself off mid-sentence. As his eyes locked onto Melissa's face, his breath hitched. The apology died in his throat. He took a step closer, squinting through the falling snowflakes, his eyes scanning Melissa's exhausted, tear-stained face. Melissa felt a sudden urge to pull her worn cardigan tighter around herself, feeling exposed under his intense gaze.

"Melissa?" Matthew whispered, his voice trembling. "Is that... is that really you?"

Melissa blinked, her mind racing. How did this stranger know her name? She looked at him closely, searching the bearded face and the kind, sorrowful eyes. Slowly, a memory began to piece itself together. Two years ago, before her life had spiraled out of control, Melissa had been a dedicated oncology nurse at the city hospital. She had spent countless nights comforting patients and their families. And then, she remembered.

"Matthew?" she gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "You're Clara's husband."

Matthew's eyes filled with tears as he nodded slowly. Clara had been Melissa's favorite patient, a brave woman who had fought a losing battle with cancer. During those long, dark nights, Melissa had been Clara's rock, holding her hand and comforting her. But shortly after Clara passed away, Melissa's own life had shattered. Grief, the loss of her own sister, and a severe bout of depression had led to her losing her job, her apartment, and eventually, her hope.
