The Proposal on the Sidewalk

The afternoon sun beat down on the concrete canyons of the financial district, casting long, dramatic shadows across the pavement. Olivia, dressed in a sharp camel-colored blazer that screamed wealth and prestige, did something that made the bustling crowd of corporate elites stop dead in their tracks. She dropped to her knees on the dirty sidewalk. In front of her sat Charles, a man the world had chosen to forget. His face was weathered and scarred, his hair unkempt, and his body wrapped in a frayed canvas jacket. He looked at her with a mixture of fear and profound confusion.

Olivia’s hands trembled as she held out a small blue velvet ring box. Inside rested a heavy, antique gold ring. "Marry me. Please," she whispered, her voice cracking with an intensity that silenced the onlookers.

Charles blinked, pulling back slightly. He looked at the elegant woman kneeling before him as if she were a ghost.

"Why me?"
he asked, his voice rough and dry from years on the streets.

Olivia pulled her square sunglasses down slightly, revealing eyes red from crying. "Because it's you," she whispered. She pushed the box closer. "Please."

As Charles stared at the gold ring, his eyes suddenly locked onto the intricate emblem engraved on its surface. It was a crest he hadn't seen in five years, yet something deep inside his fractured mind sparked. His breath hitched.

"This name..."
he murmured, his voice trembling as a flood of forgotten memories began to break through the fog of his amnesia.

But before he could say more, the screech of tires shattered the silence. A sleek black SUV hopped the curb. Three burly men in tactical gear jumped out. "Get him, stop!" one of them yelled. Olivia’s heart plummeted as she recognized her father’s personal security detail. One of the guards pointed a finger at Charles, shouting to his partner,

"Don't let him remember!"
