The entire diner went dead silent. The clinking of silverware stopped as every eye turned toward the corner booth. Sarah stood up slowly, her face pale and her heart hammering against her ribs. She had worked at the diner for three years, pouring her heart into her job, and she couldn't understand why helping a customer would lead to such a harsh punishment.

“Arthur, please, what did I do wrong?”

Sarah pleaded, her voice trembling. “I was only helping Lily. She spoke! Isn't that a good thing?”

Arthur’s face turned an even deeper shade of red. He refused to look at Lily or Mark, keeping his fiery gaze locked onto Sarah.

“I don't pay you to chat or play therapist to disabled kids! I pay you to work. You've violated my policy about disturbing the guests. Pack your things and leave,”

he hissed, his voice dripping with an unnatural animosity that felt deeply personal.

Mark stepped forward, his protective instincts kicking in. He stood between Sarah and the furious manager, his grey wool coat billowing slightly as he confronted the older man.

“Arthur, stop this madness! This young woman just achieved what three years of expensive speech therapy couldn't do. Lily hasn't spoken a word since the accident that took her mother. Why are you acting like this is a crime?”

Mark demanded, his voice echoing through the quiet diner.

Arthur sneered, refusing to back down. But Lily, sitting in her wheelchair, was watching her father and Sarah defend her. Tears streamed down her face, but she wasn't going to let Sarah take the blame. She grabbed the edge of the table and pulled herself up slightly, her voice shaking but clear.
