Previously: When an anxious young woman rushed into Arthur's jewelry shop to sell a gold locket for fifty dollars, he never expected the photos inside to unlock a dark family secret.

The Chase in the Rain

Adrenaline surged through Arthur’s aging veins as he threw open the shop door and plunged into the downpour. He didn't care about his open shop or the cold rain soaking through his shirt. All he cared about was the young woman who held the key to his missing daughter. He saw her dark green jacket darting through the crowded sidewalk a block away, heading toward the subway entrance.

Arthur ran faster than he had in decades, his heart hammering wildly against his ribs. "Please, stop!" he shouted, but his voice was swallowed by the city noise. Fortunately, the wet pavement worked in his favor. The young woman slipped near the stairs of the subway station, tumbling to her knees. Before she could scramble back up, Arthur reached her, gently but firmly grasping her arm.

"Please, let me go!" she sobbed, shielding her face. "I didn't steal it, I swear!"

Arthur knelt beside her in the rain, holding up the open locket. "Where did you get this?" he demanded, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "This is my daughter Lily. Tell me where she is!"

The young woman, whose name was Emily, stopped struggling. She stared at Arthur’s tear-stained face, her eyes softening with a sudden, tragic realization.

"You're Arthur," she whispered. "She told me you would be here."

Emily pulled him into the shadow of a nearby concrete pillar. She explained that she had been trapped in a secluded estate upstate, working as a maid for a wealthy, dangerous man. Lily was there too, kept as a prisoner under lock and key for ten long years. Lily had secretly given Emily the locket, begging her to escape and find her father. But Emily had been followed by the man's security guards. Selling the locket was a desperate test to ensure she had found the right man without raising suspicion. Suddenly, Emily pointed a trembling finger toward a dark sedan idling across the street. "They're here," she whispered.

"They're here," she whispered.
