A Simple Cup of Tea Brings a Stormy Night Biker to a Waitress's Front Door
Previously: When Clara served a drenched biker a hot cup of tea against her coworker's wishes, she never expected him to track down her suburban home months later with a life-changing revelation.
The Unforgotten Debt
Jack smiled, a gentle expression that didn't match his rugged appearance. He pulled a worn leather wallet from his vest. "I am, ma'am. I never got the chance to properly introduce myself. I'm Jack. And I didn't just happen to ride by. I spent the last three months trying to find you."
Before Clara could ask how or why he had tracked her down, the front door of her house opened. Her husband, David, walked out onto the porch, his brow furrowed in concern at the sight of a large biker talking to his wife. But as David descended the steps, his eyes locked onto Jack's face, and he froze. The color drained from David's face.
"Jack?" David whispered, his voice cracking. "Is that really you?"
Clara looked between the two men, utterly confused. How did her husband know the mysterious biker from the diner?
Jack took a slow, deliberate step forward, his expression turning solemn. "Hello, David. It's been twenty years since the shipyard accident. I see you still walk with a slight limp."
David gripped the porch railing, tears welling in his eyes. He turned to Clara, his voice trembling. "Clara... this is the man I told you about. The coworker who threw himself in front of the falling steel beam to save my life. The one who spent months in the hospital and then disappeared before I could ever thank him."
Jack shook his head, holding up a hand. "I didn't disappear to avoid you, David. I was broken, bitter, and angry. I lost my career, my home, and my savings paying off those medical bills. I ended up on the streets, eventually finding solace on the road with my bike. I became a drifter, angry at a world that I felt had abandoned me."
