Brenda tried to regain her composure, stepping closer to Clara in an attempt to snatch the clipboard. Officer Davis, who had been watching from near the patrol car, took a step forward, his hand resting casually near his belt. Brenda retreated, her face flushing a deep crimson that matched her sweater.

"You can't do this, Clara!" Brenda hissed. "Mom promised me this house before she passed. I’ve been taking care of her while you were off living your perfect life in the city!"

Clara felt a sting of betrayal at her sister’s words. The truth was far more painful. Brenda had cut off contact with their mother years ago, only returning when Evelyn’s health began to fail. Clara had been the one paying the medical bills, coordinating the hospice care, and holding her mother's hand in her final hours. Brenda had simply shown up after the funeral, changed the locks, and declared herself the sole heir.

Brenda had always been the impulsive one, prone to dramatic outbursts and schemes that rarely ended well. But this was a new low, even for her. To falsify a dead mother's signature was a line Clara never believed her sister would cross.

"Mom didn't promise you anything, Brenda," Clara said, her voice cracking with emotion. "And even if she had, the law doesn't care about empty promises. It cares about this."

Clara flipped to the second page of the document on her clipboard. It was a certified copy of Evelyn's final will and testament, notarized just three weeks before her passing. Brenda’s eyes darted across the text, searching for a loophole. She had previously presented a deed to the police, claiming Evelyn had signed the house over to her. But Clara had known that deed was a cheap forgery.

The document Clara held was undeniable. It clearly stated that the house was to be sold, with the proceeds split equally, but only after a specific condition was met. Brenda’s hands began to shake as she realized her forged deed was completely useless against the official probate document Clara possessed.
