I stood frozen, looking between my sobbing grandmother and my sister on the floor. "She's an old woman, Rachel! How could you do something so disgusting?" I yelled, my voice echoing in the brightly lit kitchen. I knelt down to help Helen, grabbing a dish towel to wipe the soup from her face and hair. We had lived in near-poverty, working multiple jobs just to pay for our basic needs, while Helen "graciously" took us in and claimed she was spending her own meager pension to keep a roof over our heads.

The documents proved otherwise. Helen had received a payout of over five hundred thousand dollars from our father's life insurance policy. She had systematically transferred the funds into her personal offshore accounts, leaving Rachel and me to struggle for over a decade.
