The Whispering Casket

The air inside the funeral home viewing room was thick with the cloying, sweet scent of lilies and the cold, sterile draft of the air conditioning. Sarah stood rigidly near the heavy white casket, her hands trembling against the starched white fabric of her apron. For fifteen years, she had served the Vance family as a housemaid, but her true devotion had been to Emma, the family’s fragile, kind-hearted twenty-four-year-old daughter. When the family abruptly announced Emma had passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest during Sarah's weekend off, Sarah's world shattered. But the pieces didn't fit.

As Sarah stood beside the casket, a bizarre sensation prickled at the back of her neck. The room was filled with wealthy mourners, but the grief felt hollow. Helen, Emma’s mother, stood nearby in an elegant black dress, her face devoid of real tears. Her brother, Marcus, was quietly discussing real estate on his phone. Then, Sarah heard it—a faint, rhythmic scratching sound coming from inside the sealed white casket. It was followed by a muffled, desperate gasp. Sarah froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"She's not dead!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with terror and desperation.

The mourners gasped. Helen’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury, and she hissed for security. But Sarah knew she had only seconds. Desperate, she spotted the heavy emergency axe mounted on the nearby wall. In one swift, adrenaline-fueled motion, she ripped it from the bracket. Before anyone could stop her, she swung the axe overhead and brought it crashing down onto the pristine white casket lid. The wood splintered with a deafening crack.

"Have you lost your mind?" Marcus yelled, lunging forward to grab her.

But Sarah stood her ground, tears streaming down her face. "I heard her crying... Emma!" she sobbed, pointing the axe at the shattered lid. Suddenly, Marcus froze. From the darkness of the broken casket, a raspy, weak cough echoed. The entire room fell into a dead, terrified silence.
