The Smashed Coffin

The air inside the wood-paneled funeral chapel was thick with the scent of lilies and collective grief. Mourners in pristine black attire sat in hushed silence, their heads bowed. But the solemn peace was violently shattered when the heavy double doors burst open. Mia, a twenty-four-year-old maid dressed in her emerald green uniform and white apron, stood in the doorway. Her brown hair, usually kept in a neat low bun, was disheveled. In her trembling hands, she wielded a heavy, rusted emergency axe.

Gasps echoed through the chapel as Mia marched down the aisle, her eyes locked on the polished white wooden coffin resting on silver stands. Before anyone could stop her, she raised the axe and brought it down with a splintering crash directly onto the coffin lid.

"Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Mia screamed desperately, tears streaming down her face.

Arthur, Emma’s fifty-six-year-old husband, lunged forward, his salt-and-pepper hair disheveled as his face contorted in fury.

"Have you lost your mind?!" he yelled, his voice shaking with a mix of rage and sudden terror.

Mia swung the axe again, shattering the lid further. "I heard her! I heard her crying!" she tearfully pleaded, pointing at the splintered gap. "I washed her hair this morning, her hands were warm!"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Then, from the dark depths of the shattered coffin, a faint, muffled female voice whispered,

"No... don't do this to me..."

Arthur turned pale, looking around in sudden panic.

"Did you hear that?"
he stammered. Eleanor, Emma’s elderly mother, stepped forward with trembling hands, touching the broken wood.
"My God... Emma?"
she gasped.
