The Desperate Strike

The air in the viewing room of the Sterling Funeral Home was thick with the scent of lilies, roses, and a suffocating, artificial peace. For Sarah, the family's long-time housekeeper, that peace was a lie. She stood in her orange maid's uniform, dirt-smudged and tear-stained, holding a heavy emergency axe she had dragged from the hallway. To the wealthy mourners gathered around, she looked like a woman who had completely lost her mind.

"She's not dead!"
Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with pure desperation. She ignored the gasps of horror from the family. With a primal cry, she swung the axe backward and brought it down with all her might. The sharp metal blade sliced through the air and smashed into the pristine white wooden lid of the coffin, splintering the expensive mahogany into jagged pieces.

Elena, the sister of the deceased Emma, shrieked in absolute terror, clutching her pearl necklace as wood chips flew across the room. Marcus, Emma’s athletic thirty-year-old son, stepped forward, his face contorted in a mask of fury.

"Have you lost your mind?!"
he shouted, gesturing aggressively toward the ruined casket. Behind him, Richard and Claire watched in stunned, motionless shock.

But Sarah didn't back down. Tears streamed down her face as she looked at the hole she had created.

"I heard her crying,"
she sobbed, her voice trembling. She leaned over the ruined lid, peering into the dark, splintered interior.
"Emma?"
she whispered desperately.

A heavy silence fell over the room. Marcus approached, his anger suddenly freezing into a cold, paralyzing dread. He looked down into the dark opening, his eyes widening with genuine terror as a faint, raspy gasp echoed from inside the coffin.

"Did you hear that?"
he whispered, his face turning pale as a ghost.
