A Smug Soldier Mocked An Old Man, But A Single Tattoo Changed Everything
The Phantom of the Desert
The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the high desert shooting range, waves of heat distorting the horizon. George adjusted his worn, tan field coat, feeling the grit of sand under his collar. At seventy-two, his joints ached in the heat, but his eyes remained sharp as broken glass. He walked with a slow, deliberate pace toward the registration desk, carrying a battered rifle case that had seen better decades. Behind the desk stood Derek, a thirty-two-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a pristine navy tactical vest and a smirk that showed he thought he owned the world.
Derek looked up, his eyes scanning George’s dusty boots and weathered face. He let out a soft, mocking chuckle.
"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"Derek asked, his voice carrying across the quiet range. A few other young soldiers nearby snickered, watching the old veteran with dismissive amusement. George didn't flinch. He silently reached for the registration pen, pulling back his sleeve to sign his name. As his cuff slid up, a faded black wolf tattoo was revealed on his rugged forearm. Derek laughed again, folding his arms.
"Nice tattoo, old-timer. Did you get that to look tough?"

George ignored the jibe. He picked up his scoped rifle, walked to the firing line, and took a deep breath. The target was a minuscule red dot swaying in the crosswinds five hundred yards away. Derek leaned against a post, waiting for the old man to embarrass himself. George exhaled slowly, aligning his sight.
"I only need one shot,"George murmured. He squeezed the trigger. The thunderous crack of the rifle shattered the desert silence. A split second later, the electronic monitor flashed a perfect, impossible bullseye. Derek’s smirk evaporated.
"What? Impossible!"he stammered, his face turning pale. A tear of sheer shock and sudden realization rolled down his cheek. From behind them, the base commander’s deep voice echoed: "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
